We were on track yesterday at the newly launched Japfest 2: The Evolution at Rockingham for an exhibition match. I was loving the course – very fast and required lightning quick direction changes, a speciality of the Mid-engined DW S15. I made it to the final against Danny Eyles but carried way to much speed in the mid section, and took a diversionary line across the grass to avoid a big smash. Then in the last run, I proceded to limit the S15 up the long straight, where just before I turned around to stop, the car had some major traction issues combined with some unfamiliar smoke in the cabin (not the good tyre type smoke)…Turns out my rear tyres were covered in oil and there were two large holes in the sump :(.
We’re suspecting an oil pump wheel failure, but until it’s apart it’s a bit of a guessing game. It was a real shame as the car was going really well.
Great fun event though, and congratulations to Danny for taking the win 🙂
Al is working on a full video of the event so we should see that later in the week. 🙂 Anyone got a 2J? Naturally of course, we’ll keep you posted with progress!
It’s going on the ramps now for investigation…
Agh that sucks! Took out a fair bit of metal though…
Saw it happen really gutted because it looded awsom and sound even better.. i was out on track right after, and that corner was scary without the thort of oil. Hope you guys get it sorted soon..
We’ve taken it apart – the oil pump has literally explodinationeteded.
Fit new oil pump, then game on?
More investigation first. Need to pull some bearing to see the crank, as it ran for at least 15seconds with no oil pressure I reckon..
What could cause an oil pump to explode like that?
I’ve never seen anything like that before
[…] to get the S15 on the ramp and confirm that the problem was the oil pump wheel as Phil suspected (see here).2JZ Smash Smash Smash! from Driftworks Ltd on Vimeo. The rebuild has already begun!Tweet Tags: 2JZ, […]
