A day in the office Part 21: More Valves Please

Yes, we missed part 21 out and people complained to the office DW Complaints helpline, so lets do it now. Cast your minds back when Phil turned up one morning grinning like a Cheshire cat in his new toy, a fully ITB’ed AE86 Corolla. The idea was to buy it, tidy the wiring up, map it, and go and drive it on trackdays – a key part of our new venture TrackCulture (officially launching early 2011). But Phil being Phil has decided that a half bare shell restoration and a minor race car build is actually going to be more fun. 😀

As with how many of these things start, the 1 million year old 4AGE started running a little strange, and after a quick compression test we confirmed one of the cylinders wasn’t in a healthy place.

And then as these things tend to go, once the engine is out, you think – well, I’ll just tidy this up. And patch this up. And restore this bit.

Anything that wasn’t totally solid was removed – there was quite a bit, but all the important bits were solid.

Soon, the entire front end of the car was stripped for a full metal rebuild.

In fact it was so light that after the gearbox started coming out, we realised it was going to fall of the ramps backwards as the rear axle was keeping it totally out of balance!

But BoonBoon came up with a decent enough plan, and we attached a 12j to the front to counter the weight.

Steve-O tested out the new bottle of gas on the welder…

… and set about restoring the AE86 back to life!

And what do you do with a dead 16 valve 4AGE? Well – You replace it with a 4age with 4 more valves of course. So a black top 20valve engine was supplied by TJZ Engineering, and I believe there’s already some 20v cams, and a few other goodies on the way.. 9000rpm here we come. 🙂

See you next time!

should be inspiring me to crack on with my car.. isnt though..

20v should suit track use alot more than road/drift use.

I like to think that Paz is standing there thinking, “man i need an ae86 again”

Oh noes! you took too much of it apart – put it back together quick or you’ll have a bare shell before you know it! – and we all know how that turns out.
