Released in 2012, ZN6 Chassis was a joint Toyota and Subaru project aimed at evoking the sporty affordable drivers cars of the Late 80’s and 90’s. Its more of a Subaru than a Toyota to me,
Think a modern take on the AE86 (Kind of but not really), Think NA S13, S14 or S15 (but also kind of not really).
You can get them as Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ or Scion FRS. To save my sanity I’m just going to call them all GT86’s but you can insert which ever one you have there.
These are one of those cars where its harder to make look bad than make look good. They look great with coilovers and a set of wheels, maybe a lip kit. Yet some people still manage to make them look pretty Yikes, so lets see if we can avoid that with this guide.
Things To Watch Out For!
GT86 uses M12x1.25 Thread Pitch wheel nuts, like a Subaru and not like a Toyota. Worth keeping that in your mind.
They do not take a massive wheel without arch work. Think of it like an Impreza where you use 7.5 ET45 and sizes like that on stock arches. If you want those concave or dished wheels you will need Camber arms and an arch roll.
If you’ve done with Impreza Brembo upgrade you will limit what wheel choice you have due to how big the Brembo is.
OEM Wheel Sizes
The GT86 came with 3 OEM sizes at launch that are all pretty thin and high offset.
- 16×6.5 ET48
- 17×7 ET48
- 18×7.5 ET48
There’s also a GT86 RC version which was about £16000 new, on steel wheels but they are pretty uncommon to come across.
OEM +
For a wider wheel with no arch work, i would recommend an 18×8.5 or 18×8 ET35-45, This will fit with no arch work and allow you to use a full sized 234/40 tire
For this kind of fitment i wouldnt recommend 9″/9.5″ or an offset of ET30 as they stick out a bit much and dont look great –
Sporty Fitment – Arch Roll / Camber / Coilovers
Here’s an example of what i think great OEM fitment for GT86 is, its a customer’s car, so I’m a bit bias but –
Work Emotion Kiwami – 18×9.5 ET38
HSD Monopro (Recommended Springs)
Air Suspension – Stock Arches
For cars using Air Suspension you can get away with the above sizes and a larger tire, but if you are looking for a much more cambered example you can use something like
- F 18×9.5 ET12
- R 18×10.5 ET12
You can of course go wider. but the amount of Arch Work / Camber you will need will obviously adjust as you go.
Overfenders
Im not a purist when it comes to cars with Overfenders. I’m not even too precious if they are genuine or not but what i am interested in is getting good fitment with an Overfender. The purpose is to allow you use a bigger wheel, Bigger wheels + more dish or concave.
Ain’t nobody want to see your RB kit with 150mm spacers on 18×8.5 ET50 wheels. Its always better to wait and get the right wheels otherwise you just spend money on not the right thing.
Have you ever wondered why the Liberty Walk or Rocket Bunny Demo cars look incredible at TAS or Auto Messe? But then when you see one 5 years later at your local Tesco meet it looks crap? 99% of it comes down to the wheel fitment.
Rocket Bunny – F18x9.5 ET -35 R: 18×10.5 ET -46 ( Bear in mind this is for V1, V2-3 may need adjustment.
Varis – F 18×9.5 ET10 R 18×10.5 ET0
