Outsiders – An Introduction

Outsiders arriving in Japan

It’s a little daunting just sitting in a chair, staring blankly at over 4000 photographs of one of the most incredible experiences of your life. But then it’s even more daunting to have to select the best of those photographs, write words to describe that experience to thousands of people, and somehow do it justice. But over the next few months that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.

Fortunately I’m not alone in this, as the main reason for the whole experience is down to the filming of Outsiders; an underground drift documentary that’s aim is to get to the core of this crazy adrenaline filled world we call drifting, and show it in it’s truest form. So where else would we go other than the birthplace of it all – Japan.

Armed with not much more than some cash and a camera I accompanied Phil Morrison, James Robinson, Matt Steele (more famously known as Mitto), Pieter Gouwy, and filmaker Al Clark, on a two week tour of the country to finally experience it for ourselves and to hopefully show the rest of the world something different.

Japan rail pass

We’d be travelling Japan by foot, train, rental cars, and even a small fleet drift cars.

Outsiders filming

As well as finding ourselves quite lost using all of the above modes of transport.

Mazda RX-7 FD3S in Machida City

There was so much automotive culture to take in that it’s quite a shock to the system. Even within thirty minutes of being on the JR Narita Express to Yokohama I saw more JZX100 Toyotas than I’d seen in the UK the entire 7-8 years I’ve been into drifting.

Pieter Gouwy on the floor somewhere in Japan

That said, it wasn’t just the automotive side of things. Japan’s culture as a whole is a pretty big shock if there ever was one, and at times it had us flat on our faces in wonder.

Nagoya

So over the coming months whilst Al is busy working on the full-length DVD, I’ll be showing you some of the amazing parts of Japan we visted.

Kids Heart

The fantastic tuning shops and garages we checked out.

Mitto Steele and Masashi Yokoi

The influential people and legends in drifting that we met.

Bee-R R34 D1 car

The incredible cars we saw from the drifting world.

Nissan Skyline KPC110 GT-R

And the incredible cars from other segments of Japan’s vast and varied automotive culture.

R32 Skyline street drift

We hit the streets to show you some of the extreme underground roots of drifting that only happens at night – not that it actually happens. 😉

Phil Morrison and Shane Bingham at Meihan

To the more legal side of drifting at some of the most famous drift circuits Japan has to offer. Some of us even got the chance to drive. Yep, that’s Phil rocking out at Meihan Circuit in an S14!

Outsiders in the air

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we’ll be showing you. Stay tuned for more very soon.

Great write up as usual Daniel! And nice pictures too, it looks like an incredible trip! Words can’t describe how much I want to do something identical to this

How do you think Japan has coped with the Tsunami and developing back up from when it happened?

Greetings! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering if you
knew where I could find a captcha plugin for
my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having trouble finding
one? Thanks a lot!
