How often do you get excited about a shipping container?
No? Never? Weird.
If you have been subscribed to our Youtube you will probably have seen our video on Phil’s holiday in Japan to pick up his Promodet/RWB 964T . This is something plenty of us have dreamed of doing. Going to Japan, picking up your dream import and driving around before shipping it back to your home country where you can enjoy it further.
I got a call from Rich at 7:00am that bluntly stated; “Its going to be here at 8am. Can you be here?”
“Yes.”
As I turned into the Industrial estate the lorry with the container was sitting waiting around the corner, I’ve never been so excited by a Maersk container. Phil, not being one to do things by halves had decided to have the whole container delivered to the door to ensure nothing weird happened.
Once on the ground, the grinders came out and the door’s were cracked open. Drones were launched and camera’s were ready.
We all knew what was inside, but there’s something exciting about the first look at the car in the UK.
In person, the car is incredible. In my opinion the car is a Promodet build car first and an RWB car second.
While it may not be as wide as the other RWB cars, it doesn’t need to be.The beauty of this RWB964T is that its shape has only been improved by Nakai. It hasn’t been massively blown out of proportion, while being clearly a special car.
How Perfect can one car be? Phil seems pretty into it.
For those of you that have seen the Vlog, you will know the car has an overboost issue. The car was straight into the unit, on the ramp to get to the bottom of the gremlins.
We believe that the issue has developed after the car had been sitting for a length of time before being sold.
Later that night the issue was diagnosed and fixed, as easy as that. It is now MOT’d and awaiting registration!
It’s great to have seen this all come full circle, I can remember seeing the car when they photos surfaced from the auction house and being mind blown. I can remember hearing rumours Phil had maybe bought it (Long before I started working here or knew Phil). I remember the first photos going up on Instagram when he and Mel picked it up and I was here to see it touch down on UK soil.
Phil’s plans are to restore it to how it had been when all the love and attention was put in, we still know very little about the car between 2008 (when the RWB work was carried out) and when it came up for sale. We know that the previous owner that took the car to Nakai was called Mr. Saito, and then a gap until it appeared at auction. I got in contact with the ever helpful Shinji Yoshioka (RWB 964RS aka Good Hills Speed) to ask if he could find any information on the car, he got in touch with Nakai and managed to get links to the old RWB blog from 2008 showing the car mid build in Chiba. Impressive flip phone photo’s really date the build.
