Let’s discuss the legitimacy of 4WD drifting. Now, in terms of your standard competition, FD, BDC etc four wheel drive is outlawed. But whilst it does prevent us having it in the UK at the moment, I can’t help but noticing that a lot of people on the European continent (yes, Pre-Block) have been nailing amazing entries and silly drifting speeds at ridiculous angles for quite a long time. So how come outside of competition we’re not seeing more people pull off ridiculous things like this in the UK/ US and the like? Blocks Gymkhana series proves it can look spectacular (although I’ll argue the actual live televised Grid gymkhana was a bit dull and boring compared to it’s amazing advert), so is there a place outside of standard competition for 4WD cars to join in the fun? Personally, we want to see some of these guys and cars at Awesomfest next year mixing it up. And here’s a video to help you make that decision…

stuff like this is awesome dont get me wrong! but if there was a 4wd class in the bdc/edc etc. how long would it take before everybody was pulling backwards entries? plus you’d need massif powa’s and lots and lots of tyres 😛
I was at the recent Gymkhana event in Germany and despite the bad weather it was an interesting event. Many high powered drift cars struggled and the lower powered more compact machines fared better. Lots of gnarling and screeching from differentials..
The organisers of that event tried to emphasis drift by laying out the course accordingly, so it was compulsory to drift between obstacles and that worked OK.
There were no 4 wheel drive vehicles in the competition which was a shame really.
In a Gymkhana event they would come into their own. I was impressed with Foust’s performance at Gymkhana Grid, though he is an experienced rally driver too.
I don’t think 4 wheel drive belong in a traditional drift competition, though they are spectacular to watch doing some maneuvres.
4WD cars make more corrections to go sideways, but in the drift competitions that means loosing drift, and this is considerating as mistake. You can see it right in this video above… It looks awesome, but i think they need a different class, and different judging ways.

I do agree that 4wd is pritty amazing but only if you do wot ken block does, I would say it’s better to see a rwd car get a backwards entry than a 4wd.

I agree with this! I know a lot of people don’t but hay! If nothing else Block is cool to watch which in my opinion is what this form of driving is all about. These guys also put on a great show! I was entered for the Gymkhana Grid Comp but the support dropped so couldnt make it 🙁

Don’t really feel it has a place in drifting though because in a rwd car it’s about balance of control but with 4wd it’s more about who has huge balls.
4WD drifting would definately need its own class. You could also have 5 cars instead of 2 competing in a run!

I always love watching Liam Doran in Rallycross, He knows how to slide the car well (and overtake while doing it as shown in that vid :P)
I think it takes more skill and balls to 4WD drift, anyone who disagrees……have YOU actually tried it before you shout off…. its hard
When cars are going sideways around a corner I want to see massive amounts of opposite lock, it looks much cooler than all 4 wheels pointing at the apex of the corner trying not to slip off the track.
The only problem with 4WD drifting is you need alot more power and things break alot, and power is money, so it will make it harder to get into for your average person. However it does look awesome and id love to see a seperate 4WD class run along some of the other drift competitions. We just need more people tuning 4WD cars to mega spec like they do in scandinavia!

4WD Drift class or not I would buy a DVD filled with those types of entry attempts. I remember watching skate video’s as a kid and the skater would try over and over until success was theirs.
