But there has been doubts on when and if the FT-86 will enter production. Those concerns have been addressed in a recent article by a Japanese newspaper which revealed that the FT-86 will make its debut later this year, along with its jointly developed Subaru twin.
Developed in a unique partnership between Toyota and Subaru, the upcoming FT-86 sports car won over audiences and gathered much interest in concept form at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, but its road to production has been broken up by uncertainty and a ‘on-and-off-and-on-again’ battle.
Speaking with the Japanese paper, Fuji Heavy Industries President, Mori Ikuo, reportedly confirmed that both models are nearing the end of testing.
Ikuo claimed that the production FT-86 (which some reports suggest may be called ‘FR-S’ in Toyota form) will be “very comfortable and fuel-efficient”, benefiting from a low centre of gravity for proper sports-car handling.
Exact technical details haven’t been announced, although it is known that both models will be powered by a Subaru-developed 2.0 litre turbo-charged boxer engine. The Toyota version will be a rear-wheel driver while Subaru’s model is likely to receive an AWD system. Some reports claim power figures in the region of 200kW. Yee-Ha!
the back of that is not that great hope its not so futuristic when its produced
Exactly as above, a little too futuristic for me too although real versions do usually tend to come back to the current time!!
I’m so pleased we’ve got a proper car to look forward to as i’m sick and tired of seeing all of these Hybrid, electric god knows what else cars being realised.
I can honestly see myself in a few years time owning one of these if the prices are right and the actual car turns out alright.
This is 100% a positive for performance cars/drifting.
Can’t wait to see it released!!!
This car is similar of nissan GTR? Realy?
The subaru will not have awd. Looking forward to seeing the final subaru model. All pics ive found are just a chasis covered up with impreza pieces for testing… 🙁
i dont care what anyone says i nearly shit a golden egg when i saw this! also if you look at the roof line it has got a very similar line to that of the GTR.
simple i want one!
The back is like subarus legacy
Hoping for sub 2500lb area.
hmmmm…
I have a more fuel effectient AE86 from this century. So efficient in fact it uses no fuel at all.
I’m not sure I like that 🙁
umm, im pretty sure progress on this thing has all but stopped for the time being.
its like a mix between a 370z, GTR, rx7, rx8 and an audi
268bhp Subaru boxer turbo engine in a Toyota FR chassis!! This car could be EPIC!
I bet the Jap tuning houses will be all over this fella!!!
don’t know whether i like or not hmmmm
I’ve been living in a sense that its going to be a naturally aspirated 2.0 Subaru Boxer engine with output somewhere around 200-220bhp. What would make a 1000kg car enough fast. a 200kW turbo engine just doesn’t sound realistic, at least in Toyota- form in current Co2 scheme. Maybe in a Subaru STi- version.
I remember reading about this engine that Toyota had to assist Subaru quite much with the engine developement, at start Toyota were not happy with the quite robust boxer engine.
