Project Update: DW R32

Looking pretty sorry for itself huh!
Months of neglect caused by the absolutely mammoth task of moving into our new premises means that with just two weeks until the first round of competition, we really have our work cut out………………………….

So last year our beloved R32 had a fresh new look, and we made it go pretty well too with a 550bhp Toyota 1JZ engine. This year the idea is to lose some weight out of it, get a bit better reliabilty, and tidy up all the loose ends you inevitably end up with when refining a car like this throughout a season.

So weight. We’ve had a complete strip back of all the un-necessarys; wiring, heaters etc. We’ve fitted some fibreglass doors, and lexan windows from plastics4performance, and the big bit; we bit the bullet and decided to get rid of the shite roll cage. It’s scheduled with Nickson Motorsport for next week for the real deal.

Oh yeah, did you notice??……  STRUTS! we swapped to a Mcphearson strut setup up front so we could use the Driftworks Geomaster hub knuckles, and save a bit of weight over the double wishbone setup. The Driftworks S15 has such an amazing setup with our off the shelf parts, it was a no brainer.

So, the car had a lick of paint last year, but the engine bay was never done. Partly because we never had time, but mostly because paint would never stick to the residues of around 10 exploded engines. So a heavy couple of hours soaping and jetwashing the bay, then prepping, etch priming and a couple of cans of 2pack resulted in:

We’ve done this job far too many times: swapping valve springs, retainers and cams into a new engine. Actually one of the biggest swaps I forgot to mention above is that we’re finally able to get rid of the VEMS ECU aids that’s infected this car for a couple of years now, so engine expiries should be a thing of the past, as long as we can keep Bons dirty sausage fingers away from the boost controller.

So here she is as of this evening; engine sitting pretty again. Still plenty to do, but she’s on her own feet, and her hearts in the right place 😀

Oh and for anyone contemplating the McPhearson strut swap into a R32 Skyline, here’s the picture we wish we could have found when taking it on. We hope it helps 🙂
