tyre setup size widths

I am looking at buying new tyres for drift setup i dont have huge amounts of power there is so much conflicting information and its doing my head in im not going to go and spend £100 a tyre on the wrong tyres Its a bmw on 17" alloys so far ive been told there to big and need to go smaller...
