AE86 owners :-- What Engine Oil do you use ?

Hello Fellow AE86 owners.

Just wondering what Engine oils you all use, and advantages/disadvantages to the ones you use.?

I was thinking of changing to Castrol R Mega expensive, but smells nice :wack: !! and good protection.

Ive always used Vavoline Turbo V 15w50. Its £10 for 5 litres!

Any decent 10W40 is about right. Pay more attention to the cleanliness of the oil and the quality of the filter you are using than having a JDM tyte brand of oil.

If you are rich then Redline's ester oils are just about the best around. Costs a fortune to change every 3-5k though and even though the oil may stay together longer than minerals, it still gets dirty.

Bottom line - a decent 10W40 (Castrol GTX/Valvoline/Mobil/Silkolene etc etc) changed often with an A1 quality filter is the best overall option.

add some slick 50 to her also :D

I wouldn't. Spend the extra on a decent oil!

General Remarks on Chlorinated Additives.

A number of ‘add-on’ additives intended to improve the performance of commercially available automotive lubricants have been marketed in recent years, under such names as ‘Xxtralube ZX-1’, ‘Metol FX-1’, ‘PPL Anti-Friction’ and ‘Activ-8’.All such products share the following characteristics with ‘X-1R Friction Eliminator’:-

1)They all contain chlorinated paraffin ‘exteme pressure’(EP) compounds first used in the 1930s in heavily-loaded industrial gearboxes, and in some automotive transmission applications, mainly hypoid gears.

2)They all corrode copper-based alloys at moderate temperatures, easily exceeded in all engine, and most transmission applications. This problem was recognised in the 1930s, and chlorinated compounds were never used in transmissions with bronze bearings or gears. No responsible manufacturer ever suggested using them in engines where their increasing activity at high temperatures could lead to piston ring corrosion and bore glazing. (For the same reason, modern ‘hypoid’ additives are not used in engines, even though they are much safer than any chlorinated additive.)

3)X-1R Friction Eliminator and its clones are based upon very outdated technology, which was abandoned by responsible lubricant manufacturers for automotive transmission uses in the 1950s. Chlorinated compounds still find applications in metal working, but their use is on the decline because of health and safety considerations.

4)When burnt, chlorinated paraffins produce corrosive hydrochloric acid, and organo-chlorine compounds including the highly poisonous phosgene gas. Apart from these corrosion and health hazards, with petrol engines the deactivation of exhaust catalysts is also a problem.

5)Unfortunately, these additives give spectacular results in simple EP test machines such as the ‘Falex’. As a marketing ploy, a demonstration of this type looks impressive to those not aquainted with the above facts. Also attractive is the low cost of chlorinated compounds, allowing profits of several thousand percent to be made.

Don't bother

Cheers
Simon

Had a spin in a Nova today with a XE in it. Fucking shifted man. Twin 48's, cams, headwork, steel crank. Revs to 9k and it was fucking rapid. I can't wait to get mine running :)

By the way Will....you still want my AE85'esque interior? Also have you got contacts for cheap 45's or 48's? Im in dire need of some form of fuelling for my car

Cheers Adman! ;) It was my Black Betty San. Just PM'd for more info. Hopefully they're just what I need. At the moment I'd like to get ITB's but it's whatever I can afford :( How would I do the ignition if I go carbie? Still need electronics due to the RWD layout and dizzy being somewhere inside the bulkhead ;)

I'm sorted for passenger seat now though I'd have your rails, but I suspect you'll be wanting them??

I'll give you some fuelling for your XE86... fucking liquid semtex in the tank.

On a nicer more helpful note, I've got a pic of an XE86 from back in the day if you need it - shows the engine in the bay on carbs or TB's, can't remember but I'll go and dig it out off me pikey spec hard drive.

If you want it, give me the email address you want it sent to.

I asked here http://www.aeu86.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=324#324, nice read. Just to sum it up, checked on the valvoline site, recommended 75W90 GL-5 oil, only to hear that that stuff eats your synchro and people recommended 75W90 GL-4.

As for differential, a GL-5 oil specifically for use with LSD should work just fine. I used Valvoline GL-5 LS oil and so far it seems good.
