Not sure if this is the right section but ill ask anyway.

Anyone had any experience with BMW 1 series 118d the 140hp or the 120d 177hp? what they like at getting sideways not looking for some full on drift car just something i can have abit of fun with and still cruise in comfort im only 20 so its going to have to be the diesel engine ones.?

Thanks jake

If you're going to get it sideways then just get a cheapo Nissan or something and tear the guts out of it. The 1 series will have traction control that you can't turn off and any damage you do to it will hurt you a lot more than denting a £600 Nissan

You can turn traction off just fine.
Open diff, short power band and expensive repairs isn't the best combo for a drift car but get a manual and you'll be able to play in the rain with it.

I got a 120d coupe for a daily - is ok but the open diff pisses me off - I had a Quaife in my z4 coupe and that transformed it.

Might be worth looking into cases and whether the internals from an e36 325 might fit and use the limited slip unit out of that in your case.

I had an old e36 325 and even though the LSD was worn it still worked ok - it would be fine for a but of a play and normal road use.

Had a 123 convertible (gay I know) and a 125i coupe for a couple of weeks. To be 100% honest the only thing the 125 had over my e36 328 was the seats were a little more comfy. That was it. I would never be able to justify the cost of a 1 series when you could get an e36/46 m3 for so much less.
Diesel engine wise the 123 was pretty awesome in the way the twin turbos gave fuck all turbo lag but at 32mpg I didn't find it worth it as the 125i was a lot more drivable. I've got a 520d which I assume has the same 2.0d as the 120d and its nothing special.

cheers for all the replies didn't know what they would be like being a heavy little car, i would go for a E30 or E36 but the insurance is crazy being only 20 with no no claims and the 120Ds are fairly cheap insurance compared to similar cars

Sorry but, with no, no claims and only being 20 how much are you looking to pay for insurance on a 1 series?

Because I'm 20 and at the moment I don't have any no claims bonus and I wouldn't even begin to want to think how much insurance would be on that, and if it was "120Ds are fairly cheap insurance compared to similar cars" I'd be going to a bmw dealer right now.

What sort of figures are you getting on them?

I can't believe it!

So I've just gone on a insurance compare website and insurance on a 116 is exactly the same well actually £50 cheaper then it is to insure my 1996 vw polo 1.4.

So I think I know what I'll be getting next year once I've got 1 year ncb.
