Bmw 318i se e46 helppppppppppp

yo guys,

i know your probably gonna start moaning because this post has been done 1000 times already..
but when i search for this post i cant find nothing relevant!

on a serious level, ive just bought a 318i se e46, for £475.. its in good nick, i want to drift this, how much am i looking to spend to get this drifting level? and what will i need for a good skid?

also this is my first car and im 21, my insurance is £200 a month lol.. i still want it road legal, if i have to make it offroad then i will

any advise is much appreciated :)

Weld the diff and go for gold, if it rolls about too much fit a set of cheapo coilovers, that's all I've done to my E46 and it skids well.
 
What he said, doesnt need much more than that to get going. Where are you located? Find a good local event that you can get some seat time at. Non circuit stuff is better for beginners. Up this way Norfolk Arena Drift Team hold monthly track days on a small kidney shaped track on the infield of a speedway circuit in Kings Lynn. Cheap day and a really good crowd of people, which to be honest you will find at any drift day.

You got off to a half decent start by actually buying a car rather than asking what to buy or how to go pro. Maybe use less p's in future posts ;-)
 
lol thanks guys, im located in peterborough bro, yeah my brother used to go to norfolk drift arena, i know a few people like damen haskett etc, sorry to sound noobie lol what you mean go for gold? isit necessary to buy a racing seat and wheel? i kinda want them just so it looks cool. lol.

Focus on what will help you learn and not what will look cool. Not bouncing around will make you look a lot cooler than a seat and a wheel will.
 
Haha sorry man 'go for gold' is just a phrase, as in give it your best shot. As for mods all I have on my e46 are: Welded diff, TA techniks cheapo coilies, hydro handbrake.

To be honest I don't think the hydro is even needed, but if you can pick one up for cheap then why not. Dont worry about seats or steering wheels unless theyre actively holding you back, I took my bmw round Lydden with the stock seats and wheel with no worries, right up until I crashed
 
If you spin and stall, remember to hit the ASC button again lol or remove the sensor on the rear left if I can remember right?
 
Weld the diff and kick its head in.
It will skid, learn without a hydro first use the cars weight to make it step out.
Then suspension mods.
 
guys your legends! thanks alot for your advise, definately listened to everything you've i cannot WAIT to start drifting! is 1.9l powerful enough? or will i need a engine swap? i dont want to change the body of the car as i got a excellent price for the condition :)

ive seen some hydro's for like 30-40 quid or are these gonna be useless lol?
 
Leave the power as is for now until you feel like you want more! Id say there isnt that much point in the hydro because its quite low power. Try butting duct tape over the normal handbreak button and see how you get on with it and then youll know if you want one!
 
Don't get suckered in to boosting / tuning / engine swapping, your car will end up off the road for most of its life. The 1.9 will skid fine, if you want it to accelerate quicker use smaller wheels, smaller profile tyres and strip the interior out.

Dude handbrakes in e46 SUCK! They have a drum inside the hub and if you try to rip it up to slide you will brake the handbrake leaver before them back wheels lock up!!

I've got a 46 with welded diff, lock spacers and coilovers and it slides fine. Only recently put buckets in and they were a pain in the arse to fit right, the tunnel is at an angle and you have to put the seats right up against it. I wouldnt bother untill you physically slide onto the passanger seat then you know you need em!
