CA wasted spark setup

Hoping some of you nice folks have any info on a wasted spark set up for a CA.

I've looked into it but can't work out a couple of things.

What sort of coil pack should I use? I've been looking at ford one, with 3 terminals (1 power in 1 to fire each of the coils) but was unsure if I need a specific type form a certain car.

As far as the wiring goes I've worked out that I need to keep the igniter module but do I connect the wires to fire cylinders 1-4 & 2-3 from the module together the connect them to each coil?

The only other thing that I can't get my head around is that the only info I could find on the net about this setup (GM Ignition Swap – (CA18DET) – NICO Club) says that you need to alter the dwell angle in the ECU chip. Is this cause his not using the Nissan igniter module?

I any of you very smart, funny, handsome people (trying the flattery approach) have any info you can give up it would be mucho appreciated.

Little off topic answer, but why do you want a wasted spark setup ?

Unless you are aiming for very big power figures, the oem system is fine. You can also get splitfire coils to replace the oem ones if you get limited, but i think it is not an easy job to change from the oem system to a wasted spark, as it will need ECU tweaking too. It will also generate a lot more electrical noise if not properly installed. I am also not sure it will cost less money.

I have seen a CA18det revving to 9000rpm with 1.8bar boost working very fine with splitfire coils by just upping the dwell time, and it has been working for a long time, not just burning after a month use.

Dwell time depends only to the coils used. There is no way to tell what number must be input, as it will change from one coil to another, but i *think* it may have to be halved from standard, as each coil now fire for 2 cylinders, and may not have enough time to charge between 2 fires. The longer the dwell, the stronger the sparks, the hotter the coil.

the thing is that your ECU thinks it is piloting 4 coils, so it wil still output 4 signals.

From what i recall, firing order is 1,3,4,2, so wiring 1&4 together on one coil and 2&3 on the other is fine. This has to be confirmed though.

I'm only running stage 2:-

T28
Apexi induction kit
Japspeed stainless manifold
Japseepd elbow
Japspeed 3" exhaust system
FMIC
Alloy rad
stage 2 chipped Nissan ECU

That's the mods so far, I am planning on adding as I go.

I'm looking into the wasted spark set up as a replacement for the standard coils, as mine has gone though a few lately. Not saying the standard set up is no good, just looking into alternatives.

I did look at Splitfire coils but at £300+ for a set the price puts me off. A Ford coil pack is about £80 plus a wiring plug & pig tail for the coils & a bit of wiring harness from a CA loom (which I has in the garage) so a lot cheaper.

As for the dwell thing I was thinking, when you swap to wasted spark using the kit that :dw: used to sell, did you need to alter the dwell?

I think Mr Bizzle has experience with this set up, so I'm hoping he'll shed some light on this.

im sure steve (the don) carter was the test muel for the ca wasted spark stuff
to be honest id just get a few spare coil packs and stash a known good one in your car just in case one dies.i bet you can pick up a good set of 4 for £20 so its not worth the messing around

@croustibat
Do you´ve got a link to a project or anything from this 9K rev car? :smokin:

It is a friend of mine, he does have a project thread but on a french bbs that needs registering to read. He sometimes posts on sxoc too, nickname streetbike. you can find some vids from him on youtube (use streetbike and s13 as keywords). The last one he did was a 120-250km/h in 3rd and 4th gear (5th is useless as we have a common problem : our ECUs cuts in at that speed by retarding ignition a lot. We are going different roads to solve it, he will be using another not limited ECU, and i am making a system that will send a false speed info to the ECU when above 220km/h).

He blew his engine though, due to a machining error, one of the bores has not been correctly done and what we always thought was a hydraulic lifter noise ... happened to stay there when switching to solid lifters. It was in fact the piston knocking on the cylinder wall :wack:

We are both running on e85 fuel (way cheaper and has 105 octane). His setup is hugely above mine. I will have something similar to a stage 3 setup, running e85 ( 10-15% more horsepower for free, yay :smokin: )

I think he has a ported & flowed head, solid lifters, stronger springs & valve retainers, cams, gt3071 turbo, forged internals of course, Z32 maf, bigger injectors, splitfire coils, and so on. Standard intake manifold. He made his maps with a nistune, and still managed to get 450+ hp with the piston kissing the cylinder bore :wack:

I can't wait to get a taste of his new engine. He is also throwing in a new intake manifold with a bigger butterfly, and a 8cp crank from sxoc. It was already a savage beast before, i guess it will be evil after that :D
