Ca18det Rebuild Questions!!

Planning on replacing my ca18det HG. Everything is bone stock. I was wondering if its worth throwing in arp headstuds or just going with oem ones?

Also heard people having problems with cometic head gaskets, is this true? If so, what are your recommendations ???

Any help is much appreciated.

Cometic head gaskets need a perfectly level face to seal properly, you can't just pop one in and hope for the best.
Some people use sealant like Hylomar if they have issues.

Ill be getting the head resurfaced before throwing on a new headgasket. hylomar? Never heard. Gasket sealant i'm assuming?

For my RB rebuild I was recommended (by conceptua tuning) athena gasket over cometic. Wasnt much difference in price either.

What are your boost/power targets? Did the oem bolts let go?

Ill check out athena!

My plan is to keep stock turbo but possibly raise the boost from 7 to 10psi.

The motor was given to me as my friend decided to go 1jz. It started to overheat at the track (however wouldnt overheat on the road) and the dipstick kept blowing out.

My main goal is to replace only the HG and head studs being the cheapest and efficient repair for more boost. I will however check compression soon to see if i'm getting any blowby either from the rings or the headgasket.

Stock boost on the CA18DET is 10psi anyway.

If that is your goal then just use a stock head gasket and stock bolts, total waste of time doing anything else.

Dipstick blasting out is a worry, has the engine breather system been messed around with??

This.

Also for the dipstick, it could be something as simple as a blocked or incorrectly routed CCV.

IIRC there's only one pipe for ventilation between the block and the head, it's a shit design and can easily get blocked.
