Cheap Drift Car's

Ive already done one thread discussing if the FC is a decent CHEAP drifter. Turns out it is a good car but has no LSD as standard and possible engine issues.

Can people help me list all the possible CHEAP drift cars. I know experts can drift anything but Im no expert. Just want to have some cheap fun. Help me fill in the blanks or add more detail.

S13 - Ive already had one of these. Its brilliant but want something different

S14 - Brilliant again but not exactly cheap and again need somet different.

AE86 - Cheap and AE86 dont go together.

E30 - NO LSD ??

FC - Expensive maintenance and NO LSD

Supra Turbo -

Mitsibushi Starion -

Toyota MR2 - Spin happy. NO LSD.

Z32 - Lard arse. Who ate all the pies ?

Surely there are more out there.

E30 - NO LSD ??
I believe that the 325's have LSD, but it's easy to check, just take a jack with you.

FC - Expensive maintenance and NO LSD
I think that the Turbo II have LSD, though are rare and expensive still.

Supra Turbo - Heavy car's but drift fairly well. Don't get a auto though!

Mitsibushi Starion - Good car's, have seen 1 drift to. Excellent engine.

Toyota MR2 - Spin happy. NO LSD.
Rev 3 Tubbies onwards have LSD. All RWD are spin happy, it's practice that controls how often ;)

Escort mark 1&2 - Proven drift cars

Sierra XR4 - believe has LSD

Any old cheap RWD car with a welded diff is probably your best bet though!

XR4i's don't have an LSD

E30 325i has an LSD and ROCKS for drifting

MR2 doesn't exactly have ideal wait distribution to put it mildly

I'm looking for a Celica Supra 2.8 at the moment (if anyone has one

only the 325i motorsport came with an LSD as standard.

S14's are pretty cheap now, you can pick up a high miler with tatty bodywork for 2 grand and it'll need very little work to turn it in to a respectable basic drift car.

I was looking for a cheap drift car a while back and was looking at sierras, mk2 escorts and 325i motorsports, but in the end, the S14 worked out cheaper....
really depends on how much work you want to do yourself and what you consider is cheap

e30 325 with M sport package does have LSD. It handles well and its cheap. At least where i live :) If you dont get LSD with it you can probably get one cheap. And if you need more than 170hp engine swaps are easy. E50 engine from 525 (192hp) fits in nice. Also, you can put in 3,5L engine from 535.

But that realy depends where you are from i guess. In UK S13 is suposed to be cheap. But here the cheapest samples are selling for 2000 pounds. And its very hard to get parts too, i order must of parts from UK.

when you say cheap, how much you willing to spend?

By the time you buy a cheap car, and spend the money on the right bits for it, you might be better off paying a little more for a car with lots of stuff done already.

Cheers

325i mit welded diff

You can't much cheaper, and they are a laugh. 325i with an LSD is superb, my car with a welded diff is superb but underpowered (525i 150hp) for the weight, 325i with a welded diff would rock. :D

FC Turbo 2s are cheap when for sale, but the cheap ones are probably coming up on a rebuild. :(

I reckon like Rob says, for pure fun factor an old powerful RWD car with a welded diff can't be beat pound for pound. Normal 325i, weld the diff, off you go. Fit some uprated suspension for proper grins.

Alternatively Sierra XR4i with a welded diff, BMW M535i (they have bilsteins as standard, 218bhp, LSD, etc) or any 535i with a welded diff, Ford Capri 2.8, Supra 3.0 N/A would be my choice over a turbo for less blowing-up-ness.

If you want something Jap I'd go for a Supra 3.0 N/A and weld the diff, the one I drove was really really sweet, could have had a lot of fun in it.

What would a car with welded diff be like forevery day driving ?

Ive already had a S14 and is the obvious choice but want somet different.

How about some of the older Nissans like the laurel or older Mercs 80's E Class

older, more obscure cars like the laurel would be ace until you needed to replace something. Let's face it, if you drift your car you will break something or crash it sooner or later, that's just a fact of life.....

Big mercs.... I think they'd be too lardy to be a good drift car.

One option that might be a cheap solution is an ex rally car. They don't fetch that much cos most people don't want them. I found a Sierra all stripped out with an LSD, 2l pinto, full cage, buckets and harnesses, but with no MOT for £600 when I was looking for a car. Just couldn't get a way of transporting it :(

Scott's ex rally TR8 is an incredible beast

Merc 300E or 190E 2.6 would be good, but they're ALL autos, and expensive compared to a (superior) bmw. ;)

Welded diffs are fine for every day driving, really all you get is scrubbing at low speed, the rest of the time it's cool.

325iS and 318iS do, most 325i's don't (rarely specced option), but who gives a shit? Just get down the scrappy and pick up some samples for welding. That's what I'm gonna do... very tempted to sell the 20v AE86 and get a shitter of a 325i, strip it out, pikey coilover it and veld ze diff. Proper Euro-drift for very little wedge.

Motorsports are nice, but not hardcore enough and too dear. 100% lock MIG/TIG spec diff is far superior to a 25% lock up ZF LSD found on the Sports. The gay (but admittedley nice) M-Tech kit and Sport extras add weight. I'd rather have a stripped standard-looking 2-door shitter.

Mitsibushi Starion - Good car's, have seen 1 drift to. Excellent engine.

2.0l is OK with mild turbo/boost mods, but nowhere near excellent. G54B 2.6 lump is a better engine if you spend $$$ and get a non-jet valve head casting. Otherwise look at cracking a head every 3 drift days. DOHC 4G63 from an Evo will fit in place of the old Lancer version on the 2.0l cars with a bit of work. The stock multi-plate LSD's are very respectable though.

did you see that at Bordon at a conedodgers day? If so, it was me. The car drifted ok, but the steerinng is absolutely aweful, steering box and variable ratio power steering. one minute it was light and nice, next minute, half way through a drift, it was bulging forearms heavy.

Also, they overheat massively at the first sign of higher boost/lower speeds. the day at bordon cost us a holed piston, headgasket and a new power steering pump.

The Evo engine fits, but its not straightforward, and is extremely expensive. Look at paying £2500+ for the engine alone.

The Colt Lancer EX2000 Turbo is a similar steering setup, and incredibly finicky once past the limits of grip. They are also very rare and sought after, expect to pay £1500+ for one needing a little work, and £500+ welding it up every year! They rust. They rust so bad, you breth heavy and get brown patches appear!!

For a cheap drift car, we just built a very good s12 silvia. mods cost a total of £200 including a full service!! ours runs a welded diff (easy to do, and easy to replace when it wears out), rear coilovers robbed from an old track car and bodged to fit, s13 front hubs and suspension, T25 turbo from an s13 and a celica GT4 chargecooler setup. the interior is completely stripped bar the dash and a bucket seat (£10 from a local jap importer, second hand from an MX5!!)

The car cost £200 with loads of history, loads of MOT and a months tax!!

Whilst my s14 is off the road, and until I turn 25 in october and can insure my GTR (     insurance, grrrr), I am using the s12 as my daily driver!

BMW with a welded diff it is :D.
I may have even seen the car I want.

Anybody have any links or information on how to weld up a diff ? Better still does anybody know a good 'diff' welder in Yorkshire ?

why did you go for a chargecooler and where did you mount the radiator?
Not that I'm planning anything  ................

surprissed

no ones said a r32 gtst, excelent cars solid and parts are eassy to get hold of. aftermarket parts are also cheap if you look hard enough and GTR parts fit right on
