Come into a bit of a situation welding my diff.

Basically my mate called me up cause he was told I was hunting for an open 1.8 MX5 diff to have welded up and had a whole rolling chassis he needs gone, said I can pick up the diff, so I did. My mate thats pretty decent with a welder was going to crack it open and weld it all up for me at his work. Got a phone call from him after he got the backing plate off cause he couldn't see where to weld it, turns out my mate was sitting on a Torsen diff which he's just given me for free.
So now I've got a Torsen Diff which will be decent for daily driving and shit as I've got a manual rack and I live in the Highlands so each track day its a fair trek down south so not sure how often I'll be making use of a welder. Probably once every couple months.
But on the other hand are LSD's that pish for learning in and I should just weld it and deal with it? I've yet to hit a track and try out anything other than an open diff in the wet so fuck knows what to do in this situation. I really can't be arsed pulling the diff out twice.

Advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

Just skid with the torsen - most of the people that tell you they are shit on here have never even driven a car!

Yeah if its a torsen leave it, will drift just as well on track. Iv never had a welder on my mx5's, only ever used Torsens and thats over several years, several rounds of the NDC and a couple mx5s.

Torsen, Manual rack, Just get on with it plenty of us run a similar setup here. :)

Torsen is fine.

I've had 3 with welders and the last one came with a Torsen so I left it.

It's fine.

Ah nice, I was kinda hoping you would reply as the info I've found on here you know what you're talking about Welders in dailys and general MX5 skid chat. Was planning to just weld it up and get these recaro's fitted then rag on it til it broke but seems I've come across a beast find. Just going to fit the Torsen and have a welder as a spare.

Mint, do you guys head down to crail and that often, do you ever do anything up Aberdeen way in like Alford or the like?

I live in Alford :p We go to crail often, between us I think weve done 3 days so far this season and Pete got a Driftland day in.

Nothing in Aberdeen or abouts though.. Plenty of mountains though, loads of sweet spots for skids, but cant really talk about that on here.

Check your water hoses.. The ones near the bulkhead. Those tend to blow up pretty feking quick after a drift day. :p lol.

Sweet, I would be selling the torsen, putting in welded and enjoy the cash. How much is a torsen on ebay?

I dont think any of the mx5 diffs are worth anything though.. Iv seen them all go for about £50..

More to the point.. why swap something that is proven to work just as good?

Edit - Just checked. Some people are selling open diffs for £150 on ebay! Most around £50-£70, some over £300!!! HAHAHAH madness.

Yeah there's a fair few good roads up here and on the west coast but not confident yet to be chucking it about on backroads and that.
Aye will keep an eye on those hoses and probably take one spare as the cars been laying for a year on my first outing, good thing I've got a spare engine now!

Aye I bought an open one for £50 on ebay but then with the Highlands postage charge took me up to £80. Good thing my mate got in contact before they sent it out like. I thought about selling it for profit but fuck it if its just as good why bother.

Torsens fetch good money.

If I wasn't so lazy I'd swap to a welder and make some money as I still prefer welders.

But I am, so I won't.

PS- Make sure its deffo a torsen and not a VLSD, as they are worse than AIDS.

Definitely Torsen, my mate was going to weld it up regardless but couldn't figure out a good way to weld up the torsen so decided to leave it. Its got the spider gears on the top.
Oh aye and since we're on the topic of mx5 diffs, are the PPF bolts normaly an absolute bastard? The diff came with the PPF stuck on and we couldn't get em off. my mate had to take it into his work to get it off. not keen for having to battle it with hand tools on axle stands if thats the case. One of the big bolts ended up snapping i'm sure.
