Demon Theifs list strut casings for AE86

They retail at 133+VAT for each side and must only run a Bilstein insert as they're a kinda upside downey! Now Bilstein, being a reputable company list a lot of different insert types. You can choose tarmac, gravel, race with different bump/rebound rates etc. Total including all the accesories to get these ready to fit onto my car is going to come to around £500 +VAT (that's with discount I get at work). Do you think I should do it? Or should I get a coil-over conversion kit and run with a SPAX or a Jap insert?

This is very tempting as it's in stock and could be delivered quickly and fitted quickly! Suppose I would have to powdercoat it yellow and say it's SPAX anyway ;) Or go orange and sell it as a Driftworks product?

James

I had a look at the coilover conversion kits for the S14 and decided against them cos they looked a bit sketchy. but I presume it's not that hard to do with the right kit. Your way sounds better though and the price is good :) I say do it

Yeah

I'm a big fan of Billies too! I think they've got the skills to make me better ;) If I sell my Tein's I will do it! Need some mooolaah first. Just chatted to the engineers at work about it and they seem to have a renewed enthusiasm since watching that video on SXOC. They are now asking me when the car is going into MR Tuning to get my GZE fitted. So I may still be getting SPAX. We'll see!

Those

back shocks that I gave you last year for the red car were Tarmac Bilstiens they were still pretty soft compared to the Jap stuff. Just get some HTS's for the back their short stroke, adjustable and not that expensive.

Jay

I got 2 knackered Rear HTS's (well, one is knackered) if you want em, see if Spax can rebuild em?

Paz

the billie inserts do exactly what they claim.
if you are doing a forest rally take the forrest insert, tarmac rally=tarmac insert.
as they dont list a drift insert and as on a drift car you are basically doing away with the rear suspension(no body roll and no grip)why not fit blocks of wood?.
however if you knew your spring rates and the bump /rebound settings you wanted for drift, race, rally, maccy d etc, they will build them to that spec

james,

remember that ive offered you Doris if u need an s13 development mule

cheers Lex

Why bother? Waste of time & money. Short stroke is the only way to go on an AE86 and the all-empowering-butt-demon will never understand such practices. Why inject more cash into the already overly funded all-encompassing-super-demonic-butt-tweaker??

Just cut 40mm or so out of the middle of the OE casing and weld it back up with a coilover sleeve, or buy complete coilovers from Gabriel Tyler for $600 or so completely assembled with Eibach springs (any rate), Ground Control sleeve and perch, AGX (or your choice) short-stroke insert and spacer to fit your choice of shock exactly.

It makes a lot of sense. You know I don't put any old shit on my Corolla's and trust me, for the money, nothing touches these wee beasties. Get some camber plates and RCA's while you're there. You can always transfer/sell them when you (or Cas) crash the car...

I've been drooling over pics from the US of ground control sleeves and shocks matched up to chopped up struts for my car recently. I really, really want it but it's mucho hassle and not cheap when you use GC shocks. I'm still tempted to go down to a scrappy and get a couple of struts to chop up for coilovers, but I'm totally unequipped for the required chopping/welding.

If I could get my arse in gear and put up with the hassle I could have my car on true coilovers... http://www.dnjmoran.com/m6/ yummy

Benji,

You can use any shocks you want, just make sure the size & stroke is suitable for the new shortened casing.

Mucho hassle? Nah, minimo hassle. Just find a decent welder. The only problem is that the sleeve is ally so retaining ring collars must be welded onto the case instead of welding the sleeve directly. Piece of piss for anyone who is handy with a MIG.

I was going to get it done on a pair of OE AE86 legs for minimal outlay, but found once I'd bought the springs, sleeves/perches, shocks and powder coating, it'd cost more than getting them complete from the US. A weak Dollar always helps such a scenario though.

Sorry about derailing the thread to talk about a german battleship.

So what kind of ball park ££s are we talking? I've not actually investigated the costs at all other than looking at the ground control website and gulping. :)

I think I'll probably end up going down the spring/shock route anyway since it's bound to be cheaper, since if I get tough adjustable shocks then there's nothing to stop me getting springs wound to suit, the stock setup is "coilover" anyway of course.

You're looking at about an hour's labour tops for cutting and welding on each strut. Should be around £40 per strut at a half-decent metalworks/welding place, as long as you provide them with the instructions/measurements. If you just walk in and say "make me some coilovers", expect to be charged custom engineering rates...

Add on your choice of springs, shocks, sleeve/perch kit & powdercoating the welded assembly to the price to get an idea. Well worth doing though, since you can lose some ride height from the strut cut yet retain a decent amount of suspension travel, unlike progressively gay lowering springs (which get gayer the more they compress...) that eat up half your stroke and turn your ride to stale shit.

Which is what I think I'm going to end up doing until I grow the world's first money tree.

I'll keep the coilovers idea on the backburner though, might construct the kit in stages over time to make it seem less expensive.
