Diff Question

Hi guys
I bought a Kaaz 2-way from you guys a few months ago and had it fitted to my S14A shortly after by Scotty at Skylinepart. Since then I've noticed that there's a lot of play between the diff and the halfshaft on the drivers side. Does this sound like a diff defect or is it possible that the driveshaft itself is worn? If it is the diff, does it come with a warranty?
Cheers
Shaiz

Curious, really I can't diagnose off that though, you'd have to pull it apart and work out what's causing it then obviously if there is an issue it'd be a warranty one. It could be all sorts of things though really!

i also have a kazz diff used for 3years now i had a concern for this, forget now who i asked but hasnt been an issue and going to be used again next year.

No prob, was just wondering if there was any known common faults with them. Would you think there's any point in me replacing the drive shaft at that side before opening the diff? The garage I took it to recently had a look at it and seemed to think its more likely that the diff is faulty than the drive shaft worn, but that was just an opinion, the diff casing wasn't opened. If it turns out to be the diff how long does the warranty cover it? Just so I know how long I've got left to get it looked at. I've still got the invoice from you guys for the unit, the invoice from when it was fitted and the invoice for the oil that I put into it after running in, pretty sure each of them is dated.

I really wouldn't worry if I'm being honest, we've seen LOTS of diffs that have some movement in the outputs, including OEM BMW lsds with wobbly output shafts.....

So long as it's not making any horrible noises/falling out/flapping around to excess it's probably fine, but the only way to know is strip it down... it just depends on whether you think it's an actual issue or not.

It is deffo an issue, the amount of play is really substantial. I'll get round to dropping and opening the case probably not this week coming but the following if that's ok time wise? What would I be looking for when I open the casing? There was no unusual debris when I did the last oil change. Would the actual unit need stripped to tell if its faulty or just removed from the case and inspected?

im interested in knowing the result on this - i too have the same problem BUT not on a 2 way but a locked diff (was on it when i got it so it might be a welder) but i have play in the n/s half shaft

Is this play as in you can slide the output shaft free From the diff but not far enough that it causes problems as a freind had this and it turned out to be that the diff was meant for output shafts from an open diff as 1 of them is a different length

Also after seeing your car at crail I would say it's your outer cv joint that's the problem Shaiz so I would find a replacement driveshaft

I really doubt its the diff.

Where is the play exactly? Between the splines of the output shaft and diff?
I.e if you hold the input shaft still, turn the output shafts back and forth?

Its really easy to diagnose physically, but really hard to explain :wack:

Sounds a bit dodgy to me, drive shafts wear out all the time, well the CV joints do anyway - I've never heard of the splines in the diff wearing out though.

my kaaz does the same. when put it on i see one side had a lil play but i put it on anyways. been on there for months now. there's a knock every noun and then when going round a roundabout but its been ok other than that.

ill have to keep one eye on this thread me thinks

is there any mad whine or anything in the back?

Shaiz I looked at your car at crail and the outer cv is dead which is why there is so much movement at the wheel replace it job done

Think I've found a pair of driveshafts for sale, will get them on the car within the next 10days or so hopefully, so that should either cure the problem or narrow it down to the diff itself.
