Diffs again...

Matt_S

SELLIN' UP!!!
Im off to the states next week for a week or so...

Thought about maybe trying to bring a diff back with me...

So far, the only diff I seem to be able to find prices for online over there is the Kaaz 2 way. It workd out at £465 incl free delivery in the states and free diff oil.
Thing is I dont know anyone who has one over here!
Has anyone heard much about them? Why are they not as common as Nismo or Cusco or Tomei for example? Why did you decide on the diff you bought? Id particluarly like Matt Steele and Phils input into tthis as you both run Nismo items...

The price is right up my street, but if its no good for drift then whats the point!?!

One more thing.... How much do they weigh?;)

Thanks as always :)

Does it come with the output shafts? I got the Nismo one cos it came as a complete kit, don't know if others (Cusco, Tomei etc) use existing shafts?? Like to know as our other S14 needs a diff but the owner not willing to pay over £600-£700 for one. :)

Kaaz diffs are highly rated. I wanted one but they never returned my emails or calls. My Cusco weighed an absolute tonne, I suspect the same will be true of the Kaaz.

yo.

ok so nismo is the shiznay. Phil runs a SSS diff whereas i have the later GT-PRO version. from what i gathered talking to phil they both drive pretty much the same in standard trim. The nismo is very effective, predictable and reliable. The Kazz diff is meant to be slightly meaner than nismo, in that it clunks and cracks more. Also when locking the kazz is meant to have a noticeable "i'm locking... NOW" feel to it, although this will be pretty much instant and wont effect the driving performance.

If you go for any of the major brands you cant go far wrong. Although i would personally reccomend the nismo kit, the Kazz comes with everything bar new output shafts... ie. - quality :D

hope that helps fella x

Nice one Matt.
Another question: If they don't come with output shafts, are the original ones OK or do you have to source some different ones?

if you have an S14 then output shafts won't be an issue. its a ball ache when you have an S13 with an open diff as you need LSD shafts to fit it:(

I'm not sure if the nismo diffs have to be used with the shafts supplied or not?

and Kaaz is mucho quality, if you can get one then do it. you won't have any regrets. the only thing that might sway me is adjustability, I don't know for certain if you can change between 1.5 and 2 way with Kaaz. website should say though if I could be assed to look!

oh, I went for a Cusco MZ myself if thats of any interest:)

Kaaz do a new "solid" type 2 Way LSD, with 16 plates in it as apposed to the usual Kaaz 8. The Kaaz also has bigger oil ways in it for a slightly longer life allegedly. Benson Hsu (Pro US, D1 qualified etc) has always used Kaaz...

Paz

Cheers for the comments so far...

As yet there is no word back from the three stockists I mailed...

Anyone else got any links fopr diffs in the states? It needs to be someone farily big, that stocks them ;)

Paz, I had a look at the Kaaz sites last night. From what I could see the "new" diff was not offerd for the S14 as yet - there were "new" fitments though (as in models added)... The plates are apparently bigger than their competitors too :)

So, should I try and get a Kaaz, or hang out for a Nismo or Cusco/Tomei???

I'm well happy with my 600% uprated viscous. Always worth considering as a cheap option :) (£400 + fitting)

Copy and paste from an Article on my own site ..

Contrary to what manufactures want you to believe, TRD-Toyota Technocraft, Mugen-Honda Racing, RalliArt-Mitsubishi Rally Operations, MazdaSpeed-Mazda, STI-Subaru Technica Int., NISMO- Nissan Motorsports, all have their LSD's made by the same supplier, a Hitachi subsidiary. This is because the majority of the normal differential gears are supplied by them. They use the cheap factory casing and re-work the inside.

The true high-quality Limited Slip are supplied by Kaaz and Cusco, who supply majority of racing teams throughout Japan.

thats only true of the old style nismo diffs as far as I know. SSS and newer are of equal quality to anyone else:)

I believe so But I'm not sure what output shafts you would use...

This Is what I found when trying to get right shafts for Cusco MZ.
Has to use the S13 VLSD Output shafts.
All the VLSD have shorter shafts to avvommmodate the diff centre.
I don't think there are any Aftermarket LSD that fit using the Open Diff
Output shafts. Have heard you can cut them down but dont know if this is a good idea without having a good look at them... Open diff centre is good for welding only ;) S13/S14 cases (VLSD/Open) Have thier differences but are interchangeable, I think all centres fit all casings.

Donor Vehicle //////// Shaft Type ////// Number of Splines on output shaft
S13 Early (Open) ///// Long //////////// 29
S13 Facelift (VLSD)/// Short /////////// 29
S14 (All) (VLSD) ///// Short /////////// 30

This ain't gospel, its just what I've found to be true. If anybody has any tried and tested contradictory findings, now is the time to say so!

The s14 shafts don't fit my R32 2 Way diff. When I fitted the innards to the S14 diff, I found the splines are different. The open S13 has the right splines but are too long. I cut them down and it seems to work, but I'm not happy so bought Steve Carter's 180SX JDM LSD today to see if the shafts will fit.

They have the same flange (5 Hole) as the R32 so I'm fairly confident. I'm going to take the diff off tomorrow or Monday to see if they fit the 2 Way, and if they do, I'll swap the lump into the 180 casing as the ratio is lower for quicker acceleration and lower top end. then I can sell on the S14 diff as Nissan intended to recoup my dosh

And could somebody tell me the part number for an nismo 2-way diff for an rs13 ca18det with an open diff and abs? these come with the outputs right?

Didnt Bara find that there are 2 types of S14 output shaft when they were developing James' uprated viscous diff? Dont know what the differences are though.

Right then, more myths dispelled at my expense

S13 JDM LSD Shafts don't fit my 2 Way :( .

Had a bit of a morning of it. Plan is have the JDM diff casing with the 2 way fitted to it with the cut down shafts as before. Fits fine into the casing

Now I've got the S14 diff to sell, as the innards can be put back into that.

The JDM LSD and shafts will be fitted to the UK S13 Casing, and I can sell that off with the matching 5 Bolt driveshafts.

Seems that the innards fit all the casings-R32,S14,S13 and JDM S13 as long as you have the right output shafts.

Fuck knows what I need for mine, probably R32 with the corresponding driveshafts to swap flanges over.
