Do I have an LSD?

Is it correct that if you jack up the car, turn it on, pop it in gear and both wheels turn the same way, then you have an LSD? Or is that just a myth.

I'm getting one wheel going absolutely mad if I try anything in first gear but in second it occasionally kicks the back end sideways, not sure if that's just a total loss of traction (has happened in cars with an open diff before)...

I thought you jacked the back up with the power off, if you turn the wheel and the opposite one goes the opposite way, you dont have an LSD. If you turn the wheel and they both go the same way, you do have an LSD.

This is correct. Chock the front wheels, handbrake off and in neutral.

What car is it? The VIN plate should identify what diff you have

Not true re spinning the wheels.

An LSD (limited slip diff) generally are Torsen units TORque SENsing, with no torque they dont lock. In the case of Toyotas anyway.
Ive got an R32 GTR and thats got a locking diff, both wheels turn the same direction with the wheels off the ground.

You will know if you have a locking diff as the rear end sounds like it's going to fall off when turning a corner slow (if you are unsure, YouTube).

if it doesn't and it sounds like the tyres are skipping when turning a corner slow and both wheels turn the same direction when jacked up, it's a welded diff.

In regards to torsen diffs ..... what he said ^^^^

Definitely not a welder! I've taken the plunge and am getting a Nismo 2 way put in on Friday so I will know for sure what's in there. This also means I can crack open the old one and answer my question for sure.

Thanks for the info!

It's a 180SX but a type S with an SR20DE in it. Since they left out the turbo I wonder if they left out the LSD!?

Type S came with LSD as an option, might be worth a look when you pull it for your Nismo :)
Be funny if you found a worn Nismo in there already ;)
