drift brakes

what sort of brake set up do you guys use?
for example, phil, what disks/pads/calipers do you have on yours?
does it have a large effect on the way you enter the corner etc?

I currently have front R34GTR brakes with slotted discs and cheap race pads, and the rear is standard 200sx with standard pads, which I tried to change the other day and sheared one of the mounting bolts :( :( :( that is really really not good. I've got braided hoses all round and dot 5 (I think) fluid.

In the near future, I will have the same front setup, removed ABS unit, braided hoses throughout, upright hydraulic handbrake, rear Z32 hubs, rear R34GTR calipers...

I personally don't think that brakes are an essential part of drifting. But then I don't have the right sort of car to drift anyway.

I uprated my brakes from standard, though not for drifting. Black diamond grooved discs, mintec pads, braided hoses and 5.1 fluid.

Brake drifting is part of drifting, but it doesn't require an expensive system to do. What it really needs are reliable brakes, and a driver that knows them.
So get practicing!

practice is certainly something i need to be doing

hoping to get access to one of the two airfields near me soon-ish for some sideways tomfoolery

havent even had the guts to get more than a squeak from the rear wheels on a corner so far, but then it is public roads and mostly been testing myself in the new car to see how far i can push it and myself in the low and high speed twisties

Are you sure about the Z32 rear hubs Phil? The shock mounts are different IIRC (fork mount rather than eye and bolt) so your coilovers wont fit.

What you need is an S13 back plate and handbrake assembly inc cable to fit onto your S14 knuckles which the GTR discs and calipers fit over.

ahh, I had pressumed S13 and Z32 used the same hub, as it's the same handbrake system I think.. shame, I had a set lined up, at least I found out now, and getting S13 stuff shouldn't be a prob.. cheers dude :)

No probs bud.

Its a pity the Z32 knuckles wont work as they are lovely lightweight ally jobs rather than cast iron like S13/14s.

Deffo the same handbrake set ups for S13 and Z32 though, I checked all the part numbers a while back.

The biggest prob you'll have is the cable. The mounting points for the outer casing are different so you might have to drill and tap your subframe and floor to match them up.

The rest of the handbrake assy should go straight on the knuckle. Make sure you get the humungous bolt with the backing plate. Its the most over engineered thing Ive ever seen on a car but it hold the backing plate in place so you'll need it.

Cant remember what the brake pipe fittings are like on the GTR caliper so you might need a custom fit braided pipe as well.

At least you'll have a decent handbrake for a change.:D

with any drifting modifications response if the main issue imho. brake mods should be aimed at a normal disc/pad combo, braided lines, dot4 fluid is fine. to make the most of these mods you can fit a master cylinder stopper, which stops the master clyinder flexing under hard braking improving response, pedal feel and braking force. also, making sure you have new, unstretched handbrake cables is a good idea.

you dont need to spend a fortune on brake set up, its nice, but definatley not needed. (pads that dont require warming up are a good idea, something like EBC green that will work right away is a good idea. just keep the rear pads fresh to keep the handbrake working. if it doesnt work, tighten it, yank it harder or slighty dab the brakes before yanking the lever.)

I've got Z32 calipers on the front with BMW M3 discs. A mounting bracket was used to move the caliper into the right position. I use mintex 1144's in the calipers. I also upgraded the fluid to DOT 5.1 (or 5.0, can't remember it's in the shed and i aint got any clothes on...) but the most important of all the front disc upgrades was using a Z32 master cylinder.

Back brakes are standard S13 discs and calipers, I will be looking for a conversion soon though.

However I do agree that for drifting it's not all that important. I only tended to use the brakes when trying to combat understeer with poor tyres on the front. I would sidestep the clutch, hammer the throtttle and dab the brakes to bring the nose in a little bit more. Twin drifting may require better response from the front brakes, but because i'm a bit of a wuss i've not tried it yet... yet... have we Steve? :D:D
