Drifting in Australia

Hi guys,

Moving to Australia in January so just been trying to look for different forums to join etc to find out more about drifting out there (because its such a vast place)

Now I will probably be going to Melbourne or anywhere really where big automotive companies or even Motorsport companies reside (I have a degree in Motorsport Design and Engineering and currently employed as Design Engineer in the Automotive world) so this is key to me but also want to be near a good drift community, near to an area that holds regular drift events etc

I don't want to give up the drift life when I get there so any help is appreciated in regards to the drift question or if anyone can help in regards to the best place for me to go to find work in my field would be a massive bonus! (I've been researching V8 supercars and most of the companies are in Melbourne hence why I might be better off going there but would prefer to be near Sydney)

Regards
Lewis

Have you got a Visa, job offer and all that jazz sorted already?
because they've tightened up on things a little recently.

Have you seen where these guys go? Vicdrift

Think they do some stuff at the Thunderdome outside of Melbourne.

VISA will be sorted soon, don't have a job offer as of such as I am still trying to find decent companies to apply for and will be moving around quite a bit to begin with to find "the place" me and the mrs will want to be living in.

Thanks for the link I will check them out.

Was actually just looking at Thunderdome (Calder Park) after visting the DCA website.

I know a few Aussie drifters, there some of the most skilled drivers about. I know a few who work in the mines, make a shit ton; fly to Japan.. buy a car and drift like mad for couple weeks, then go home and work hard graft for bucks and repeat.

One dude used to buy s15's and sell them in Aus for at least double what he got em for. Paid his entire Matsuri trip! :p The cops there are strict. They get defects if your cars been got it. This puts some people off, or most.. Im on a JZX forum thats Aussie based, and they take into consideration defect costs before modifying. :S
Fuck that.

Yea man I am aware of the strictness of modded cars over there, if I was to get into it, it would be a dedicated track car only.

Seems Melbourne is a pretty decent location (not too far from Winton where they usually hold Matsuri and similar events)

If you go Brisbane ways, Secret Drift is a good bunch of guys. Monthly morning sessions at Queensland Raceway and their matsuri's are renown as the best in the southern hemisphere

NSW has canned drifting at most tracks in the state so avoid if you can. WA has a good little community and a couple of tracks too but Brisbane would be my pick.

If you consider NZ let me know

We went to a seminar about moving to NZ/Aus and due to my career the people put us off going to NZ as the automotive industry isn't massive there.

Thanks for the info Brisbane was another option but would be 3rd choice probably, haven't really considered WA as its sooooo far away from everything.

I'll be over before in May :)

Sweet, what parts you going to be visiting?

Agree, Aus would suit your skills better. Sounds like Melb is the best bet for you. Just watch out for house prices there, will make your eyes water if you're not prepared.

Yea that's what we was thinking although the weather in Melb puts me off, seems to be much nicer over on the coast but being from Wales I cant really complain lol

Wouldn't want to live in Melb really, more on the outskirts/suburbs so hopefully will get more for our money

Arrive into Auckland. Meeting a friend for a month boarding (July) and then just where ever our van takes us :D.

Sweet! Our winter Matsuri is on in Taupo at the start of June and the final round of D1NZ is on at Pukekohe (Akl) in April if they line up with your movements

Consider Geelong if your job is on the south-western side, was over there earlier in the year and it has a real nice vibe and much better weather than Melb

Will keep an eye on this as I'm hoping to start the process of moving to Oz soon! (saving/research just now)

Personally I was looking at Southern Australia. I'm sure Stewy Bryant is from Adelaide so there is bound to be stuff near there?

Not sure if its open yet but if you search "X-park drift and training facility" on facebook its a purpose built drift track north of Adelaide

Haven't really considered Adelaide, I'll have to research job opportunities for me there.

I just had a look at the X-park looks pretty cool, also came across Mallala motorsport park and Tailem Bend motorsport park which hold regular drift days in Adelaide.

Let us know how you get on mate, I will post any more findings here also :)

Are you allowed to move straight there though?

My mates off to Oz in the summer, he was given a choice of places like Darwin up North, or small little towns/villages down south.
He wasn't allowed to move straight to Sydney/Melbourne, he's allowed to move there in a few years IIRC.

I think it depends what VISA you apply for.

Me and the Mrs looked into applying for skilled residency VISA and it limited us to Victoria State only and would of cost us upwards of £5K.

We are now just going on a normal working/holiday VISA and allows you to go where you like I believe, the intention then is to get a job which includes sponsorship which means you don't have to keep renewing your VISA.

She has a mate who hasn't long gone there, went straight to Sydney got a job (skilled carpenter) and bought/renting a beach house all within the first few weeks.
