Drivers rear still knocking!

I changed the passenger side drive shaft as it was physically knackered, you could feel the play. But the knocking is still there when I accelerate, I'm sure its not the diff. I'm guessing its the drivers side drive shaft thats knackered too, no play though :confused:.

The knock only happens once when you accelerate, and when you lift off again and then accelerate it knocks again once. Its not a once per rev knock, just does it when accelerating. Don't do it over bumps. :confused:

The rear driver side brake is still binding (pads are low too), to make sure its not this causing the knocking, I want to remove the pads and go for a drive, but I'm worried the piston may pop out. How about removing just the outer pad only, will this cause any issues? :confused:

Ricky, for fuck's sake don't be taking your brake pads out and going driving!! :wack:

How about levering them away from the disc and then driving slowly to see if the noise is there? Just be aware you'll have to pump the brake a bit before the car will stop. Use a big space :nod:

Having said that, it doesn't really sound like the brakes, as I thought it would be a constant noise.

Get a prybar and tug on everything in sight until something moves. Let me know if you want a second opinion i'll be around on sunday :thumbs:

Hi Adam, I think its the drivers side drive shaft outer joint :wack: . The brakes I sorted, dismantled everything and greased up and put back and it seems OK. When I change drivers side and it still does it, I'll see you Sunday, Cheers :thumbs:

The CV's have there's three bearings in a triangular formation in the joint and they roll back and forth in three channels in the outer cup of the joint. The channels wear in the range through which the bearings on the tripod joint normally moves, i'e at standard ride height. When you accelerate or decerate the rear of the car squats or lifts causing the joint angle to change and the bearings in the joint then roll over a wider range. If they have worn the joint cup then when rolling over a larger range they'll click as they pass over the worn area. This is why when you have knackered joints they only tend to be noisy either under acceleration, deceleration or when the car is carrying a load.

Chuck a load of weight in the boot to get the arse end down and see if it makes the noise then. If it does then it's definately the joints.
