DW spin turn handbrake button problem

Budget Drifter

Drift Terrorists
hello, just got my driftworks spin turn handbrake button and have a major problem.

I fitted it to a mk2 MX5 by upscrewing the old one, taking the spring out, and screwing DW one in.

All was well, parked up, i tried pulling it up, locking it.... etc. etc. seemed fine.

But when i went down the road to go climbing 1hour ago, i stopped at lights and pulled handbrake up and lifted the button out to lock... All was fine.

When the lights changed i tried lifting handbrake and pressing button in, but it wouldnt come down!! (the button pressed until flush with handbrake lever) It was stuck on in heavy traffic. had to turn down a road and unscrew it and put the old one back in!

Then when old one went back in, it was pertruding out of the handbrake lever twice as much as normal. and now when i lift handbrake up it locks. but the button wont come back out!! so now its stuck on in the driveway.

Please help

the DW button is too long for mx5's its ae86 fitment really, you need to chop 20mm off the length and redrill and tap the thread then put a bit of tape round it so it fits snug, i had a load of custom one's made in perfect fitment for mx5's but they're all gone now, i may get some more made but i got a few other things to deal with for the moment.

as for you're current problem refit the DW one and press it down firmly ttill it goes all the way down then hold it out about halfway and it should release the handbrake, then refit the original button with the spring till you can chop the DW button down, you may need to use some pliers to screw the original button down far enough.

why do i need to re-tap it? is it different thread size?

ill try the half way thing 2morrow morning.

cheers btw, was worried about getting it going tomorrow

cos the thread doesn't go deep enough once you chop 20mm off the length.

good luck, if the halfway thing doesn't work just faff about with it pressing it hard and pull the button out and pull and push the lever till you find the point that it needs and it will release eventually.

great, nowive gotta find someone with a tap and dye etc...

nevermind.

thanks for the advice. So when i chop 20mm off it should fit fine, and not stick on? :O

yep thats the main problem is the length as with its current lenght when you push the button fully down it pushes the rod to far down and the mechanism jams, cut 20mm off re-drill the hole and it'll be hunky dori

nope the nissan ones are fine, the nissan ones slip on and are fitted differently.

only reason budget drifter is having a problem is cos he's bought a toyota ae86 fitment one, which is the closest you can get to a mx5 fitment one but its too long and a little to skinny really.

just tried the half way trick, but its still fucked.

button is at least twice as far out as usual, and 50/50 when you lift handbrake up the button will jam, and you cant drop it unless you pull hard up to take the tension then repetitively press the button for ages till it pops out.

any ideas anyone?

is this with the stock button in place and the spring fitted ????

if its with the DW button fitted you need to just faff with it, pull the button in and out and it should release, with the button about half way is the usual release point with the DW button attatched but first off push the button down all the way in if you can and pull the lever slightly, but mine only took at most bout 5 mins to get it to release i did it on both my mk1 and mk2 (it wasn't till i fitted one on my mk2 i realised it was too long), although you may have jammed it good and proper in which case i dunno what the best thing to do would be sorry.

if you eventually get it sorted fit the stock button and spring back on till you can chop the drift button down as it will not work at its current length.

this is with the stock button and spring in place. shall i just strip it down to see whats up? can you actually strip it down? looks like the metal is bent around itself. no screws or anything really.

ill keep playing with it, and hope for the best.

Thanks for your help robbs

not really sure, we had a little trouble when i fitted one to a mates car the rod dropped to far down into the lever and we couldn't fit the drift button so we had to unbolt the the handbrake assembly and stick a screw driver in the back to push the rod out, but as for taking the whole thing apart im not sure if you can

This handbrake thing is getting really annoying now.

As previously mentioned, the button is twice as far out as usual, and it jams 50/50 when you lift it up.

Does anyone know how i can make this go back to normal?

Cheers

phil probably best you delete my review in the shop saying the button fits cos it really doesn't :wack:

only thing i can think you've done is got the rod jammed, undo the handbrake lever from the car and look down the bottom end (theres a small slit) see if its jammed, if it is get a screw driver in there to try and unjam it aside from that im all out of idea's to without actually being able to see it in real life sorry

fitted mine today, cut 20mm and re-threaded and its fine , just needs the thread drilled a bit deeper as the buttons still a lil too long..

Edit great dilivery time btw, ordered at 3pm friday, had it 9am sat :D plus a wham ;)
