E36 318ti vs E46 318ti

Am looking into getting a cheap learner to skid in this summer and have been looking at the 3 series compacts.
Was pretty settled on the E36 version until I realised I can buy and insure an E46 compact for less.

Thing is, the E36 318ti is known to be a decent learner, but the E46 doesn't seem to be used. Both have roughly the same HP (140ish) but the E46 seems to weigh a lot more.

So which would be the better option for learning in, bearing in mind that I'll be daily-ing it and would much prefer the E46's more modern look?

I'd personally go for the E46 325ti if I was looking for a compact to learn to skid in. More grunt than the little 4 pots.

Learn with a small enine, makes you a better driver.
E36 is cheaper parts, are available everywhere and proven to skid well.
46 has a much gripper rear end set up so you'll have to try harder. And is more modern so parts will be more expensive. And more computer shite.

36 wins for me 46 looks wank.

Yeah only way I could live with the 46 is if there was a way to put the coupe/saloon front end on. The lights make me feel sick
