So im 17 bought a 1996 318i for £300, put some £200 coilovers on, and welded the diff obviously for free, the car skids well with a lot of clutch kicking, now i want more power, however i've learned that these 1.8 engines are pretty limited, so thought id try (when I have the money and means) to put a SBF V8 in there.

I can pick up a good running one for £850 and ill get a cheap ford 3 speed from the same guy to go behind it (less than £100) then need to arrange a clutch and to fabricate a solution to the throttle linkage + mounting brackets. Let me know what you think.

For all you wondering, no I do not drive this on the street, day to day I drive a 1.0 2007 corsa.

Go down the M50/M52 engine swap route. A lot cheaper and have circa 200hp out the box, pretty much just plug and play too.

I would be looking at about 300hp with the mustang engine, i also dont know where to find myself the M50/M52 engines, any help?

i Have complete M50 running gear with everything you would need including box etc for £350 much easier life than trying to fabricate and more than enough power to skid well
I can have it sitting on a pallet and i'm sure it would be around £80 to get it to you :)

SBF isn't a bad idea.

3 speed is the auto box, so not only will you not need the clutch, but it will be shit.

Either the T5 manual or not at all.

All totally overkill though, just fit the M50, cheap and easy.

They also did a manual 3 Speed, and there are 2 of these sitting in Essex Mustang Centre ;), i work there for free in exchange for being taught as much as they can teach me. very good company with very good connections to the states. Essex Mustang Centre - Classic Car Specialists

However because im 17 and on a budget im probably going to fit an M50. Perhaps one day ill do the old school V8 swap when i have more time and money.

So i took my 318 to pod and it died on me noone knows whats wrong and i havnt got diagnostics equipment to find out. its definitely an electrical issue.
so I have arranged with my boss to get a 302 imported from the states and strap that to my bmw ;D he will kindly let me use his place and I will buy the parts, estimated cost of it all £2000 if all goes well ;D

Some of the old Toploader boxes were 3 speed, but that's boxes from the 60s, strong, but not ideal in performance terms to have only 3 gears really.
