Engine problems

A few days ago I turned up the boost to 1 bar on my Sil80. After the sprint (I beat the Scooby  ) The engine started stuttering and banging from the exhaust, and now I get extremely low mileage and the engine runs poorly on acceleration.
Could my sparkplugs be fried? A local Nissan mechanic ( :wack: i know) said my lambda is fooked, but then the engine wouldn't be banging and flaming now would it?
I'm chekcing my plugs tomorrow. If they're burnt out, are NGK Iridium BKR6EIX usable for my engine?
I checked www.sparkplugs.co.uk and as they don't have the 180SX SR20DET listed, I picked the 200SX S14. Are plugs for the S14 SR interchangeable with my 180SX SR?? Is 6.84 pounds a good price per plug?

Use BKR7EIX if youre running higher that stock boost. I doubt you'll beat the prices on sparkplugs.co.uk, they are pretty cheap.

Yep. Superb prices :).

You can use S14 plugs. Theyre essentially the same :) The plugs Steve quotes are Iridiums. Dont seem to have as many failure issues as there have been with other more expensive plugs...

If your lambda is fucked then the ecu usually just dumps shed loads of fuel in there to ensure it doesnt run lean which would account for low mpg, poor running and pops and flames. So i spose it could be that. They were the symptoms on my old MR2 and it was indeed the lambda sensor.

Although if it was straight after giving it some beans then changing plugs could sort it.

Why don't you check the plugs? A colour check will determin what your engine is doing. For example, if its a white sandy powder round the plugs, then chances are, you're running lean, if they've got black soot round it, chances are you're running rich. There are pictures of spark plugs and colouring in the back of every Haynes manual, do you have one knocking around for an old car? Checking can be a good indication of how your engine is running.

If your lambda is knackered and you're getting poor fuel economy, you're unlikely to be running lean. If I was you, I'd replace the lambda first, otherwise you'll clog up your new plugs too with black soot.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Checking plugs in the morning for any deposits. It happened straight after giving it some, so it'll probably be sorted with new plugs. But on the safe side, I'll check the lambda as well.

Already ordered the Iridium plugs, can't be a bad thing to replace them anyway, as I don't know how long the plugs that are currently placed in the engine.

You sure you havent just popped a hose off (or in part)? This would give spluttering, poor fuel economy as it will over fuel and you wont be able to accelerate properly:)

Agreed, after putting a new engine in mine early last year, it kept popping the boost hose off the intercooler every so often but only when giving it beans. Would run, but like a bag of shite

All piping looks like it's okay. Took out the plugs as weel, and they are pretty black.

Are they the reason it's running badly?
I hope so.....

Look at that top left Plug, the electrode is virtually all disintegrated. the others arent in the best of shape!

Id say this is a fair reason why the car is running badly!

Do all the plugs have all the cermaic still? Its the bit that runs up the inside of the plug, inside the threaded bit. I hope they are all still there :wack:
That electrode does look shit too.

Could this be the result of too low octane fuel?

Maybe the ECU is programmed for 102 octane fuel... we in Holland only have 98 octane?

I had the same problem with my R32 GT-St... ran it on 1bar boost... 4 of the 6 sparkplugs died :(

If so... how can the ECU be programmed for 98 octane fuel?

Greetz,
Hank
