Excessive front tyre wear

Hi folks,

I thought I'd post on here as I'm running out of ideas (and money).

Just before Christmas I fitted a new (second hand) diff to the 32, it was sold to me as an open diff but now that it's on the car I'm 95% positive it's actually some form of LSD since it spins up both rear wheels easily and has caught me out on more than one occasion just driving around normally.

however I've noticed that since fitting this diff I'm going through front tyres like there is no tomorrow, I've had an alignment done and currently have 1.5 degrees of camber and 1 degree of toe out on the front. The guy that did the alignment said that its likely because of the diff that I'm wearing down my front tyres quickly as being an LSD it wants to push the car in a straight line (much like a welded diff would) . But this doesn't make sense, since before this I had a welded diff and drove the car daily without any issues I know that I got a fair bit of scrub on the rear tyres when I had the welded diff on but never went through tyres at this rate and never wore the fronts like this.

Does anyone have any suggestions what I could look at next to try and solve this? various people have already said that it can't be the diff, but I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Almost 100% not your diff.

What compound / tread wear are the front tyres? Where are they wearing on the tyre? How are they wearing? (feathering edges / scuffing / tread just disappearing)

As for the toe measurement up front, is that in mm? And is it per side? Any form of toe setting outside of 0 is going to increase your tyre wear.

Something to consider is checking your tie rod inners and outers for play, along with front wheel bearing condition and condition of your struts but if the aligner is half decent they should have noted any of the above as possible reasons.

And what tyre pressure you running? How long do you normally drive it for?

Thanks for your reply BenRice,

Yeah I spent the day yesterday doing a lot of research and have come to the same conclusion.

The toe out measurement is in degrees and minutes.

I ended up getting under the car last night to check everything over and found I had a few issues most of which I have now addressed, such as the steering rack was not centred so I have loads more toe adjustment on one side than the other, I have a feeling this may have been my fault though as I may have knocked the steering wheel when I was doing some work on the front some time ago and not realised. The other issue I found was that the drivers side adjustable lower arm had come loose near the rose joint and was at making the arm at least 20mm longer than the passenger side, I've now readjusted and tightened this back up.

I still have to try and wind out the toe on the front as it got dark before I could finish, but that is something I am going to do tonight.

Thanks again.
