have you got you welded diff on?

how's it drive?
was it easy to get welded up? i have access to a welder and someone who can use it :D

With the diff welded, you will not be able to drive the car on the road, it is very jumpy and would go out on you for sport! Half shafts are surprisingly strong and don't twist/shear very easy, but always a possibility.

For the sake of it, your better off getting a proper diff in the long run

Larry, what else have you got done to your car though? I imagine you've got a few bodgetastic insane suspension mods?? lol

Hi Rob  just noticed this.

Yes I've got the welded diff on now. It has made it a bit less usable as a road car, as low speed cornering, it skips about, and I think will tear the tyres up in no time.

As for drifting, well it won't make me a drift god in the short term, but I'm hoping it will help enough to convince me that I need a decent diff. And if it doesn't, then I won't have spent £400 plus on one, and I can just admit I'm never going to be much cop, but at least I've tried.

To weld it up.

1 Take off the back plate

2 Nylon mallet to knock the output shafts out

3 Undo the four bolts holding the bearing caps

4 Brass drift and hammer to knock the diff out of the casing via the output shaft holes

5 Remove bearings and spacer, noting where they all came from

6 Undo centre ring of bolts and remove differential gear, noting spacer

7 Weld the gears together, ensuring you get no weld on any parts that will interfere with the refitting of the diff unit into the carrier

8 Put it all back together

9 Go and play with the car, bearing in mind it cannot now be used for commuting, and people look at you when you go round corners because it sounds like you're wheelspinning and you feel a bit of a tit :D

I use my welded diff for commuting, you guys are such pussies. lol :p

Doesn't really eat up the tyres any differently since the only scrubbing is a low speed, at higher speeds the tyres tend to just squirm more and not get scraped about, but then I eat rear tyres anyway.

LOL Ben:D

No, I suppose I could get used to it  after listening to Paul Smith's R32, which is a bit noisy and scrubs a bit at low speed.

It drifts better than before, so if I can't get used to the low speed shenanigans, it'll be off to Bara sooner rather than later for the diff conversion  .

well i'll been thinking of a second car if i get one i'll weld it up,

can't really afford added tyre cost and i'll have to drive it every day. :(

keep me update though,

if its really alot better i'd do it anyway :D

i need another car coz it costs loads the keep the hundy on the road.

its actully off the road as we speak coz its spun a bigend shell round the crank!

only had the engine put in at christmas! with a new shells pump etc...

don't let the oil get low!!

That's not good. Will you be ready for the 22nd, or is it not an option?

Tyre cost won't be a problem for me, as my work is five minutes away on a bike, so I don't commute in the car really-just take stuff back and forth sometimes, like tools and tyres.

Bear in mind if you get another car, you'll still need to pay to keep the 200 on the road, and you'll have to get more insurance, more tax, more MoT........

Unless you get a trailer and the other car is a sturdy one to tow it with, but then you've lost out on the daily fun car for the sake of one or two days drifty fun a month.
