As there are a few decent photographers on here, i thought I'd ask;

I've been using this zoom compact Fuji camera for the last few years. It was fine over Xmas but has always been a bit dodgy in low light or when taking red images.

Now I want to upgrade to a DSLR

Happy to buy new or used , budget hasn't been set. I want it to do at least what my current zoom compact can do.

HD Video
Flash
Reasonable stock lens 18-55 ?
Burst Mode
Live View on the screen

I don't have any preference on brand.

Try a Nikon ds3200 one of the best beginner dslr on the market, I've got one it's very good value and picture quality is superb

Get a cheap second hand body and put the rest of the money in a prime lens. Something crazy like 14mm or 16mm. Use a tripod 90% of the time and you will be pleased with your photos.

As has been said, starting out grab a 550d with a kit lens, and if you have the extra money think about getting a second lens and tripod.

I was on a budget too but managed to pick up a used 450d with the kit lens for sensible money, just need an 80-200mm lens now and I'm happy.

massive advantage 550d has over the other "budget" cameras is amazing HD video with depth of field to give it that pro feel.

Someone has suggested a 2nd hand body from : MPB Photographic - Buy Used Canon & Used Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, Lenses & More

I only know about Nikon. From a brief perusal I would be thinking:

D5000 with low shutter count - £200
Nikon AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR - £140

Just be aware that the shutter life expectancy is finite. I don't know what it is for the D5000 et al; on a prosumer camera like the the D300 it's 150,000. As a guide, I've had SLRs for nearly ten years, taken what feels like a lot of photos, and I've amassed a total of 10k myself.

Canon all the way, as said a 550d is possibly the best budget dslr on the market. Choice of lenses has a massive impact on image quality aswell.
