ford capri engine swap

my mate has an old 2 litre laser.
was thinking of changing the engine out for something with better grunt for track days

any suggestions ??

cheers for the help

For £1000 I'd not bother.

Tune the stock Pinto a bit if you want, but I'd concentrate on handling, stopping, etc etc- power is one of the least important factors for track days.

Only 'easy' swap would be a 2.8, and most of them are fucked and they're not very good anyhow, so I'd stick with that you got.

If the handling is sorted (takes more than just coilovers to make a capri handle), brakes are good, you got bucket seats to keep your ass in when cornering, a decent LSD, and it really is engine next, then usually it's decent exhaust inc manifold, decent cam, then twin 45s, decent light flywheel etc.

If it needs building, most go 2.1 with V6 pistons and a bore, then up the compression at the same time, etc etc. They have massive ports so never need a huge amount of headwork until going crazy.

If you was lucky you might find all the bits to do a V6 swap for a grand, but most V6s are fucked these days, and unless you could get all the bits to convert to injection and do a 24V Cosworth swap, which is unlikely for that money, you'd get the same sort of power (prob more) with better revving from the Pinto.

As any other engine, would take a bit of time, best way to get complete donor car take whatever you need and sell the rest.....

Aside from the fact you're trying to put a long straight six in a bay only designed for an inline4, so it's ridiculously tight, in fact I don't thing I've ever seen it done, as people put v6/v8 as that's what fits.

How much work has the pinto had done to it? Everyone I know that has pintos have spend multiple thousands on they're engines. If you were gonna keep it pinto you should speak to HPE.
If you really want to swap the engine out you could sell the pinto stuff and maybe go c20xe but I don't know the cost of tuning a xe? Maybe someone else knows?

Look at this.. A bit over the 1k mark.. I wanna do a RB25 100E. Look for a donor car atm. I know someone with a clean shell but have to see what happens.

The conversion bits come up for the rover v8's from time to time, not the most choice engine but a 3.9 will get you near 200hp and enough torque. I've got one in my mk1,on paper they don't look like they go well, but in such a light shell its pretty impressive! To be fair if you are handy with tools you could build most of the conversion bits yourself or with the help of an engineering company

Thing is you can get 200hp out of a pinto. I think it costs a lot tho but I dunno the cost of putting a V8 in but if your gonna do a swap why not swap for something a bit different
