MrNick

I love Ibiza!
i want to get a course set up for this at north weald ,anyone goy any ideas on a track lay out ,how much room will we need

Gymkhana (speeeling ;)) is a fantastic way to make use of open land and cones.. It should be relatively easy to design a simple but fun course :)

I know Paz posted a load of vids on sxoc from a Japanese Gymkhana a while ago, maybe you could look them up for some inspiration.

Its a top idea though, we need loads more of that sort of thing in this country.

Yeah, especially with all the Evo's and Subarus in this country. It's so beautifully simple but utterly spectacular when done right. Some of the Japanese Evos are incredibly quick!

Here's some photos for added inspiration.

i've got the vid of the AE86 in japan, there is more out there, saw some on driftcentral but they don't download on my pc :(

i didn't realise it was so big in japan,is there some sort of series ?

Here you go mate. Tokyo Sports Car Club, the longest running Gymkhana event in Japan i think...

Id love to try gymkhana, seems like its a great base for building on driving and drifting skills.. Wonder if car parks in the UK could be used... I bet some ghey noise restriction and public access would ruin it as usual.

Isn't this basically the same as an autotest?
In which case, there's no problem practising it at any drifting venue. If you wanted a competition, then you'd have to make sure that the insurance would allow timing.
We could run this at the Heyford events as MSE can run timed events such as autotests.

Autotests always go down well at events. :D
Of course, the MSA have an autotest championship which is run at several venues around the country, but then you need a speed license and all that goes with it.
A lot of car clubs organise this sort of thing as a closed event and sometimes run them on fields, which puts much less strain on the cars.
I used to do evening autotests as part of my old club's speed championship in my company car. Just had to clean out the grass cuttings at the end of the evening and no-one was any the wiser

Gymkhana.....Cool!!! Is it possible to hold the event (if it goes a head that is) on a weekend?

we can hold one of these at NW ,just got to be subtle re the timing aspect, should we grade the cars in bhp or just all in one catergory

This sort of thing is where slower lighter cars come into their own.. I'm not sure if they split it into sections in japan or not.. give it a go, and if it's obviously biased towards a certain type of car (elise ;)) then split up the comps.. I have to say ,I'd love to give it a go, but insurance is going to be a nightmare as although it's only a single car on track at a time, it is being timed, so is therefore a competition.. You going to be offering prizes Nick?

I think graded by bargeness.

I'll win my catagory every time... Since I'd be the only one in it....

just spoke to insurers, they are quoting for a sprint competetion and gymkhana will be inc, the quote will allow the event to be competetive not driver training ,by the way the guy spoke re insurance its not a big deal and he is also waiting on a package from a underwriter that covers alot more events that are not MSA connected,he also said that the MSA autocross is similar to this gymkhana thing, laughing i said no lets stick with gymkhana,we don't do MSA,thats to do with horses ,he said, then he laughed, and said MSA strange organisation.

sprint or gymkhana,i think sprint will need MSA marshalls, maybe the gymkhana can happen without ,whats the difference between the three
autocross
sprint
gymkhana
its all just airfield/cone driving

whatever we pass it off as ,will be a good battle !!

watched loads from the air base now, obviously alot tighter than our sprints and round the cones twice seems to be a challenge, the ae86's sound sweet, the subaru clip is good too

This looks the nuts, i'll be trying to get to one of these events.
