i think its cos its low on petrol lol ah no thats fucked up id nearly say your main shaft is broke thats wat it looks like if thats possible

i'd guess that some cogs have no teeth left and something else is broken as well.
Definately new gearbox time if its a standard box or a rebuild if the box is/was abit more special

I kept breaking the 2 constant mesh gears on my boxs for the main and secondary shaft. Loud noise, followed by a total lack of gears and horrible noises. Usually after a 3rd gear clutch kick :D

right so iv just been out investigating a bit more and what gem-s13 suggested was right. when i give it a bit more revs and try to see if i can get 2nd to grind(purely to see if its still there). it will grind so 2nd gear is still intact after all:D. got a look under the car and the prop shaft isn't moving so im guessing what danmoorhead said that the output shaft has broken/snapped.
next question is, is this a part/shaft that can be just replaced or whats the story there? like is there loads of stuff attached or just pop it out and pop in another one???

The easiest way to sort this is to replace the entire box mate. You can use a CA18 one (if they are cheap in Irl) and swap the bell housing... Or simply get another SR one.

Don't fuck about trying to repair the gearbox. They are made of cheese anyway. If you have broken one, it won't be the last.

basically what bizzle said. replace the box. if you break them that way, it's a good indicator that you have slack from the back. check you diff backlash, shims and CV joints for play. CV joints are the main culprit, its backlash that causes the output to snap like that.

ive replaced 3 boxes now. 2 broke because there was play around the back end of the gearbox (where it meets the propshaft) causing vibration and then bang bang bang, stripped main shaft.

just replace the box.

as bizzle said just get a CA box and replace bell housing (he told me that and its really saved me pennies). recently did one, only needed to replace front housing. however changed both, cleaned and blew out all the gears + my casing, used some decent GB oil. feels like new.

dont tell to many people as CA boxes might go up in price!

when you bother to make an R154 or V160 conversion, i'll be listening.

Do a T56 one and solve all problems. Large casing Nissan box is only a bit stronger than the small casing and a f**k load more expensive to repair.

just to add a conclusion to this thread.
i finally got a chance to put the car up on the lift and start stripping to see what happened the gearbox, and i found the problem. it is as i suspected, the output shaft has snapped in two.
look at the state of it.........cant get the feckin thing out of the prop now, theres always something eh...
