Hi,

here in Spain motor racing and drift is not as popular as there, but we keep trying!!

I was not thinking in drifting when I got the car, even I did not know what it was. But I started to skid and then discovered drift. MR2 is not easy, but it is challenging

i was gonna say how are you finding drifting with a rear engined car, im guessing the first couple of times you spent more time backwards!

Call me a cynic, but I think the fact there were no successful transitions but quite a few cuts just before the car either managed one or span might tell you something ........ ;)

Got any footage that shows you going round left and right hand corners at all Hugo?? :)

Fair play on trying something different BTW

o serious? my bad hy, i thought they were rear engined, i was interested in getting one but was told to start with something rwd with engine in the front cos mr2s are a little tricky....my lack of knowledge and to much trust in peoples judgement right there!

massive respect for using an mr2 , I never once managed a successful transition when I had a bash in one!

Video editing is posh too , what software did you use for the graphics etc.

It is much, much easier in the front engined RWD car. And MR2s are tricky, but it can be done. I've not seen anyone drive an MR2 as well as Rob Mayes did, and that was over five years ago.

At the same competition was a chap drifting a 120bhp S1 Elise, which was even more tricky. You need skills.

I've had several MR2s, and an Elise. Mid-engined cars can drift, but it's harder work than just jumping in a 200SX and throwing it in.

Hey Hugo, I was one of the judges in Lousada, I spoke to you for a bit on the Saturday, you're doing great in the MR2, shame you didn't stick around for the Sunday!

Doc - this guy can peddle the car pretty well from what I saw at Lousada, it was only consistency plagueing him throughout the day as it looked like a handful! He was a hell of a lot faster than most once sideways though!

Nice, fair play to the man. Want to see some transitions though, Im not sure Ive ever seen an MR2 successfully* drifted, I imagine it takes some pretty mad skillz.

* Ive seen one unsuccessfully drifted though eh Jord?? ;)

must admit i was a bit skeptical looking at the title...then the vid started...couple of raised eyebrows, was pretty impressive both the driving and the video editing, fair play!

Hi there everybody,
thanks for the welcome!
Of course the video is a piece of art, blaim the guys behind the cameras and pc (barely 1 hour footage). And of course I have spun hundreds to times.
But really, as Jord says, this car -now- can drift and make nice transitions, I'll try to film it! Nevertheless, I have done a podium in our spanish championship against m3 and nissans, so it works. Speed around corners and quick transitions are the strong points.
I worked a lot in the suspensions settings, antiroll bars and alingments. And key point, the steering, I machined the knuckels to get more than 50º and a quicker system (no power steering though). Finally more power (about 280) and diet (about 1100kg), specially at the back (that's why there is no rear wing). Standar MR2 are really difficult, it is not just the engine position, because 911s (996 and later) are much easier to drift.
Jordan, Lousada was a story apart. I was willing to race there, but I arrived very tired, I just roughly practiced 13 laps (dry and wet) and I was not allow to practice the battles because the lack of roll cage. I was not confident and I decided not to take risk and go back home save. I drift for fun with limited resources, If I crash -> game over.
I’m trying to find some funds/ sponsor to get a proper drift car and the budget to race. Till them, I lucky to have a drift machine to spend the weekends.
Sorry for so many words! But you guys there know about cars and drift and I glad to share my experience. Here, very few people appreciate it.

Hi again,

amateur video to show transitions, no cheating. Of course the car has modifications, original one, no way to do this.
More power and improved suspension set up are on the pipeline, so more to come.
