HSD HRs Topmount Binding

Put some HSD HRs on my S15, just got a quick question.

It seems that the pillowball joint on the top of the front struts is very tight, I couldn't move it at all when I installed them. But the rear ones were a bit easier to move.

When dry steering, I can sort of hear the spring turn and make noises, is this normal?

I think that the pillowball topmounts might be binding. I've constantly lubricated it with the supply spray on PTFE lubricant, but it still does this.

Hi dude,

They'll be tight to start with, drive it for a couple of hundred miles and see how you get on.

If you have any troubles then, let me know :)

Ah ok :)

When you say "dry steering" is that going lock-to-lock parked up?

Yep, stationary moving from lock to lock.

Also does it when I'm parking and generally steering at low speeds.

Listen for the noise :wack:

Get someone to turn the car and stick your head in the engine bay.
Then swap the top mounts over, see if the noises move :)

Pretty rare though, I'd be suprised if they were both doing it.
How much preload do you have?

Cool, will get that checked out asap.

There's minimal preload, the collar was tightened until it touched the spring, and then maybe 5mm more.

That is one reason right there why I don't buy eBay shite and spend the money on the real mc"coy .

Proper customer service :)

Got under the car today and the spring on the nearside was completely loose as the collar has moved. Also the 2 height collars had moved upwards.

So it seems that the nearside topmount is binding and causing the entire coilover to rotate when steering.

Now you know which side it is!
E-mail me the details as previously discussed and I'll get the bearing out to you :)

Emailed you with the details!

Very very pleased with the customer service from Driftworks! Thanks Kam!!

Just another quick question, what's the purpose of the 21mm nut at the bottom of the coilover?

Cool, I'll pick it up in the morning.
That nut holds everything together, don't touch it :wack:

Got the new bearing, cheers for that Kam. DW has the best customer service!

I remember in the instructions it says that you loosen the nut at the bottom of the coilover to adjust the height? Then tighten it after setting the height?

No you loosen the bottom locking collar, the one that sits against the top mount.

Can you post the old bearings back to me please :)

Ah okay, it's just in the instructions it reads: "To adjust the height, loosen the lock nut on the coilover base and rotate the entire coilover assembly...", should it be locking collar and not lock nut?

Yep, will get the old bearing back to you when I get around to fit the new one

:dw:

Hmmm, maybe. Depends how you look at things/what you call things.
Its pretty obvious which bit to use :)

Cheers dude!
