HSD Macpherson Top Mount PCD

Hi guys,

I've got Monopro coilovers for my JZX100 and I'm toying with the idea of trying a Macpherson strut conversion on the front end while it's off the road.

I've discovered the top mount bolt pattern PCD to be 3 x 118mm.

I'm curious if any off-the-shelf Macpherson application top mounts are the same? I know for a fact that S13/S14/S15 and E36/E46 are not, but I know Toyota have shared some parts between the JZX100 and the GT86, so possibly 86 or Subaru fitments?

I was also curious if the bottom cups and mounts all share the same thread pitch and diameter (same diameter shock tubes), as I'd need bottom mounts similar to S-Body ones to do this.

Are these types of parts as readily available to purchase separately as coilover springs?

Hope it's not too much to ask! Many thanks in advance.

Hi there

That is something we have not seen done on the chaser and realistically is not something I think you could do without causing yourself several headaches.
The chaser uses a twin wishbone but the strut top is moved quite far in on them which would cause excessive front camber and require either a custom offset topmount or re-positioning the strut top entirely, as can be seen on the image of our R32 when we changed this we had to move the strut top pretty far.
When doing this you may as well swap to something like an S body topmount as you'll be drilling the holes anyway.

The cars I have seen converted have always ended up going back to a twin wishbone eventually (our r32 has and BeeR moved back to twin wishbone after running a macphereson on the older car)

All though technically possible to do the fabrication work and room for errors on this mean you are better off just staying with the twin wishbone setup on the car.

Best regards

Thanks for the reply. I see your point about buying off the shelf Nissan parts or whichever manufacture specific part is available. Is this possible through Driftworks?

The DW R32 is what I had in mind when considering this. I completely agree and understand about the risks and headaches involved, I was just curious if it was something that Driftworks could supply?

Again thanks for the reply. It's not something I can do immediately anyhow due to daily use.

We do have spares her but these are for customers with a kit that might need parts, we could not build up a custom kit like you would need for this sort of conversion it would probably be best to buy a full coilover kit and use knuckles from that car then sell the rear pair on.

In the world of cars anything is possible but I would suggest that this conversion is not something that is worth the investment to do.
The JZX front end is a very good one and there are a range of parts out there that will allow you to set the car up really well, where as this conversion will be a mix and match of things that may not all work.

I have never seen a Toyota have this done and I think the chassis structure might be why nobody has.

Thanks for your reply.

There was a GS300 on here that was build with an S body front suspension and knuckle setup a few years ago, but like most build threads it just never got updated.

I’m currently bottoming out on loads of stuff so I may just get the spindles shortened. Thanks again.

No worries

I would look to get the spindles shortened if you are hitting your top arms.
My IS200 has shortened spindles in to solve this issue and some RCA parts to keep the arm alignment near to standard which works very well.

This is a much more widely used method of stopping the bottoming out and realistically is the better option.

Best regards
Alex
