Is the 300zx a drifter ??

My first post just saying

I Used to visit SXOC alot before I sold my S14a :( and purchased my current 300zx TT. I never rated myself as a driver but I managed to do alot of 'moves' in the hundy. I managed to get my rear end out and control it and had loads of fun. Loved the car to bits and had so much fun but I never relised I was having so much fun until I sold. Used to attack roundabouts at speed with confidence. I was basically very confident throwing the car around.

Purchased the 300zx as I was greedy and thought more BHP makes a better car. How wrong was I. I cant seem to do anything in this car. Everytime I attempt anything, even a simple donut, the car just does the exact opposite. I cant throw the car around like I dod with the hundy.

Has anybody ever owned or driven a 300zx twin turbo ?
What do you think to them ? Is it me or will I never be confident in the car. Is it totally a different car to the Hundy or do I need more practice. Is the Zed a drifter or not ? Its rear wheel drive, has a LSD and plenty of power just like the Hundy..

I miss my s14 ... starting to dream of her (Im not lying  )

Excellent website keep up the good work

Hello mate, welcome to the site.

The only reason it wouldn't drift would be down to the weight. The 300zx is a very heavy car, and may lack some get up and go at the low speeds.

However, that said the weight can be used as an advantage. eg, lift off oversteer should work a treat in a heavy car, but getting it to stop sliding will take practice.

Come along to a practice day, i'd love to give it a go. I've had no trouble drifting anything rear wheel drive yet

Is it a manual?

It is a manual has a cusco rear strut brace and tein springs. Also produces 330BHP so you can understand why I was tempted to chop in my S14a,

The weight argument is interesting because the S14 weighs 1300KG and the Z32 weighs 1550Kg so its not that much heavier. But I think it may have alot to do with the weight distribution. As I believe the S14 has better weight distribution and it's easier to weight shift. But then again Im probably wrong.

Im gonna come to the practice day and you can show me how to drift it :D

Its not weight.

I was flinging the S14 around a bit last night. Its standard, but still can get it to do the odd thing or two.

The RX7 wont move. Id need to throw it in with about 10 times the commitment, and then be damn quick to get it back as its envelope is so small. On track where theres space I prefer it, but its not as plyable given little room.

It will go, but Id need to clutch kick it or something really to get it going and thats a bit brave (or stupid!).

Oh, and its lighter than the S14 with loads more power but still much harder.

give it a diet of carbon
and strip it out.

bet you can dring it down to the weight of an s14

would the wider track give it an advantage?

250kg is alot heavier (like drifting 4 up in the S14), and you're right, it probably isnt so well balanced. But I guarantee it can be drifted.

Each car requires a specific style and approach to get it to drift. I've driven many different car's at practice days, and each behaves in it's own way.

I'm not sure about the wider track, it depends on how well the weight is balanced.

Lee, I'd love to have a try in the FD. I can't believe that with its specifications it is unable to drift.

It can drift, just its loads harder than an S14 and it will never look as good because it has hardly any lock.

Its power delivery is also really crap. Relatively speaking it has nothing and then it gains about 100 at the wheels in <1000 rpm lol. Need to keep the revs up and thats difficult.

If I drove the FD on the road like I did the S14 it would kill me lol.

haven't u seen initial D you don't need alot of lock!

the episode with the race against the civic

with their hand taped to the wheel :D

Gum Tape Death Match!

lol, watched it all again recently :D

My MR2 theoritically shouldn't be able to hold the wide angles that it does. It just comes with practice. I learnt to tune in with every bit of information the car was giving me, i.e. throttle response, what the revs are doing, how the suspension is responding, what the tyres are doing etc etc. With practice I learnt to predict what will happen if I put in certain inputs into a drift.

I thought that Chris' Elise wouldn't hold as big a drift angle as my MR2, due to the wheel base. However, having tried it, the Elise provides so much feedback to the driver that it can be literally drifted on the lockstops with greater control than the MR2.

The angle of the drift is defined by the driver not by the car. It's knowing what will happen next that allows you to enjoy what is happening now.

I don't know whether this is making much sense (I'm a little drunk :p ), but I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is down to practice. Spending lots of time pushing the limits of the car, so that when your at the limit, it feels like the norm.
