Depending on your budget you've got Santa Pod, Essex Arena and Birmingham Wheels all within an hour and a half of you. For seat time and budget skids I'd say go to Essex Arena, it's £40 on the gate with no need to book in advance and the track is wet so you won't go through tyres.

I would not say Arena Essex is a good place to learn to drift at all... Them walls take no prisoners!!!

Pod expensive and only on week days but not much to crash into... Skid Risk Birmingham also has walls in the main arena, but has a play pen where you can just mess about and learn your car a little

I guess you're right on the walls part, even a 5-10mph ding with that barrier will make a decent sized dent in your car. Just stay in the middle of the track, don't be a "super sick skid missile hero" and you'll be fine.

But other than that the wet track makes it much easier to initiate and slows the speed right down, I found it gives you way more time to get a feel for the car, how your input affects it's position on the track and so on. I went there with a £500 318is a couple of weeks ago and had non stop seat time all day, exactly what you need for learning!
