I think half the people on this site are looking for a job.

I wouldn't be moving to the uk its pretty shit for decent work atm It seems most of the people I know are looking for working or have been made redundant ect.

I'd try canada or maybe the states

Already thought about that two years ago but I don't fancy it.

If anyone needs a quantity surveyor, get in touch, can relocate etc.

You are a Quantity Surveyor and you are out of work......why, if you don't mind me asking. The construction market is good for Q/s's at the moment, assuming you are qualified or at least have some experience.
I get recruitment consultants calling and emailing every day trying to poach our guy's.

Maybe Wales is different ?

Wales is very different lol, I've just moved to Manchester because the number of professional vacancies in North Wales can be counted on a blind butcher's hand.

Ahhh, sorry, I have only been to Wales twice and never actually worked there or worked with any clients there.

The main UK construction Industry is short of good Q/S's though especially in Infrastructure, rail , water, nuclear etc. But even property is doing well again.

The answer is obviously don't live in Wales, but I guess thats not so easy if you have family etc. I left my first wife because she wouldn't move with me to Oxfordshire, but thats Essex girls for you.....she thought Oxford was a foreign country.:wack:

But then some people put family before work...

Huge amount of work in the uk but depends entirely on the sector.

I got a new job in 3 days in egineering design as the nuclear indusry is massive now. try get into something that isnt a niche market, more one thats expanding

As has been said Wales is dire! Apart from wylfa power station that is due to be started within the next 5 years there's no major projects ongoing. It's all maintenance contracts and they have all the staff they require.

In the last 5 years been made redundant 3 times. Recently got made redundant 2 months ago and I've ended up back in Asda where I first started 5 years ago.

So I've got experience as well as a HNC in construction and working towards my QS degree at the moment. So if you have any vacancies available, as suggested I'm more than willing to travel. The other problem I have is my address, people see you live miles away and immediately count you out of any opportunities.

As said Wales is a joke and the UK isnt much better.

OP- I would reconsider moving here, think 90% of the country wants out.

Op - compared to other counties this one is awesome. Despite politicitions being bellends 90% of the time.. its a wealthy country that doesn't know how good it has it.

I fear that graphics is probably to general... in the small town i live near there are 7 graphic related companies.. 4 in the next ( I use to work for one of them!) Sure there is a lot so you may think there are a lot of jobs.. but its hardily a well paid career and starting up over hear and perhaps bringing your family may not be ideal. I worked bloody long hours and got pretty poor pay to be honest. Then again, if you don't try then how will you ever know so whatever it is i suggest you go for it. I would suggest expand your horizons somewhat.

Job market fom what i can see is picking up.. ive certainly got a new job. However, its hardily high turnover currently.. most people have a job.. and are sticking with it.

i have no idea how it works with people coming into the country looking for work ( as a population.. depending on what paper you read, you will probably have a view lol!) but regardless.. good luck!

Id say they come over here and get handed free money and a decent house. If you ask politely david Cameron will run you a nice bubble bath.

yes, from what i could see through the online media, generally the UK is a nice place to be. even if you say there are some political issues, all in all it seem to work much better than what we have here in hungary. when we talk about car culture, uk is the first place that pops into my mind. that may be just me, but anyway, compared to my country, uk seems like heaven. (my main reason towards the UK. regardless of whether i get a car related job or a signmaker job or whatever.)
not to mention, 90% of the times i need some specific performance car parts or even universal parts like rodends and springs, i always find it in the uk, and order from there. happens all the time.

nice one! :)
no, i only expect things to go a little easier and reach a financially stable state, the main goals. but i aslo need to just change my environment, maybe i could take a fresh deep breath, if you know what i mean.

I work in Swansea as a QS and TBH I think we have managed to bear the brunt of the storm. There is quite a majour investment in schools atm in Wales which should keep things ticking over in the south for a few years anyway. Problem is none of the big companies are hiring trainee QS's atm, instead sticking to their existing staff. Any new blood that is comming in seems to be straight from Uni after a lengthy application process.

You could try the likes of Welsh Water who have expanded their internal QS department over the last year.

OP - Have you thought about the states, or are you worried about visa issues?
