Looking for a project drift car.

Hey guys, I'm super excited to join the forum. I'm bored of driving straight and wanna go sideways. I'm looking at some NA MX-5's and FC RX-7's. I was just wondering which would be better to learn in. I'll have about 4-5k for mods at the end of the day.

You can go two ways with this...

An mx5 with a welded diff, coilovers and a bucket seat will drift quite nicely and due to their snappy nature you'll learn far more in one than any of the larger S bodies. Clutch kicks, feinting (Scandinavian flick) etc will be far more useful to you in a low powered car, you can then use this experience eventually when going up to a more powerful car.

Perhaps consider an E36 328i, plenty of power, readily available and they'll slide all day long reliably.

I have an S14a now and it does most of the work for me, it's such an easy car to drift but I wouldn't want to jump straight into one. You're more likely to rely on the power alone and it's a bit lazy in my opinion. The main thing is seat time though, practice makes perfect.

Have fun!

I think I will go with the mx5. However, instead of welding the diff I was going to go ahead and spend the extra $$ and buy an LSD. Good idea?

Why bother? bit of a waste of money imo. If you can get a cheapish torsen then go for it but there's nothing wrong with welders.. even if car's used as a daily.

Depends what you define as better I guess, welders are probably more predictable and cheaper, but will increase tyre wear and make parking etc a bit weird. Whereas torsen diffs are usually fairly expensive and have still heard of them not locking as they should. Avoid VLSD's as they often turn into open diffs with age so don't waste your money as it won't last long.
