LSD Clunking?

Barky

Team Triad
The car has just developed this clunking noise from the diff area when I accelerate from coasting. I think its the LSD, but not sure, Any idea's? Maybe it needs an oil change after working it hard on Saturday at Silverstone?

If so which oil is best?

If it's clunking in a straight line and it's coming from the diff, you probably need to get it apart asap, it's extremely dangerous when diffs fail. When mine was clunking it did it for a bit then suddenly in the middle of town locked both rear wheels bringing me to a skidding hault in hte middle of 2 lanes.. My problem was that the Ring gear bolts had worked loose and were hitting the casing, it's unlikey yours is the same if it was fitted correctly, but it's worth playing it safe TBH..

Any chance its the ABS doing its self test. Apparantly that can make a "clunk"
Not sure exactly where it would come from though as took power away from mine pretty much when i got the car.

Just spoke to the guy who fitted the diff into the casing, he said the crown bolts are threadlocked in and torqued up correctly, so shouldn't be that, he was saying it could be the output / drive shaft joints. I did notice when I tightened the wheel nuts up on the drivers side that when I rocked the wheel it made a clunking noise, need to find out whether its coming from the joints or inside the diff. :wack:

ABS fuse is out!

I've not really noticed it before until now, it does clunk once when I pull way. And clunks once everytime I accelerate from coasting. Mine is 1.5way. Maybe it is the norm but I need to check my output shaft joints as its only seems to be on one side?? All I know is I gave it some real hammering for its first time last Saturday on the oval course towards the end of the day (used a new set of tyres in less than 10 mins), maybe its overheated the plates?

Car is looking nice BTW.

I think I know what it might be, just been out to the car park at work and had a look, the drivers side rear brakes seem to be binding on the disk, may have been cause at praccy session? I've loosened the cable and hopefully it should be OK.

Won't know until I go home tonight, what do you guys reckon any link to what I think is the diff knocking??

just change the oil like Matt says. clunks are all part and parcel of having a proper diff:) it is a little bit weird that its only just started doing it though.

Ricky, it could just need an oil change.. when was the last time it had one?

About a month ago mate. Maybe the oil I used not correct? I can't remember without going back through the posts, what oil did you eventually use?

you have a nismo diff right?

Yep, Nismo dif. I know it clunks around tight radius turns at slow speed, but its just starting knocking when I accelerate from coasting in a straight line, as if its taking up some slack??

Home time now, so I'll see if loosening the cable for the handbrake stops the knocking / clunk. :(

Just got home! I don't think its the diff, seems like suspension / subframe movement. Doing my head in :wack: :wack:

Try some pineapples on the subby mounts. Mine knocked like you describe. I put it down to the car had done 90k and the bushes were probably past their best :)
Other than that, it could be a driveshaft

hmmm. my car started doing this alot when I still had the S14 diff. I wasn't fussed as the cusco was soon to be fitted. sadly it turned out to be the gearbox was shagged, the diff clunked because it took so long to take up the slack in the box:(
