Been after an m50 2.5 for a while now with the intention of rebuilding one from ground up ready for a turbo a few years from now. Finally found an m50 but I'm sure it's got the vanos unit on it. Should I stick with it or wait til I find a non vanos??

525 e34 and 325 e36 will be M50 cast bottom end non vanos engine which is what you're after.

the non vanos engines have a smooth cam cover at the top with no bulges, m52s in later e36s like 323 and 328s are aluminium block with single vanos which you'll see by a bulge on top of the cam cover

You can always vanos delete your engine if it's getting in the way of simple tuning for a fi set up.

m50 tu (vanos) and m52 have 6mm valve stems. 2 piece design, that will seperate the valve dish(?) from the stem at high rpm.
non vanos has 7mm single piece design.

Sorry, but this is dumb...

Vanos can improve spool time significantly...

Simply look for a engine manangement system that will handle VANOS...

VEMS / MegaSquirt / MaxxECU...

May i suggest Gunnar @ ProDrive for tuning VEMS...

For a cheap mod, get a M50B20 non-vanos intake camshaft, and run it as a exhaust camshaft in your M50B25 vanos...

Thanks for all the input, I won the engine for 82 squid so gonna collect it 2moz and see what's what.once I get it back I'll give it a good going over and make me mind up on weather to keep or flog
