Hi all bought an engine which I was told was an m50, just got it on the bench and sanded down some paint of the block and come across 3 sets of numbers the last being 256s3.
After a quick look online this would make it an m52. Now on one side of the head it said 2.0 but on the front end(vanos end) it sais 2.5??? HELP!!!!!

m50 cam as a 2.0 and 2.5and was as gaz said an iron block
m52 was a 2.5 and a 2.8 (m52 b25 was classed as the 323i)
the u.s.a got the m52 b28 and was an iron block and is a bit rare on our shores (tommy hutch has one in his compact)

also the simple way of checking what you have is a magnet, it will stick to the block if m50 but not an m52 (or i could be being thick)

Just got back and had another look and it's defo the Ali block and I'm sure it's an m52 b25. Does this defo make it the 2.3?? If it does could I put a 2.5 or 2.8 head on?

to be honest, stick an m50 inlet manifold on it and remap it, less hassle.
that'd be another key to what the engine is, the inlet manifold.
not much point sticking a 2.8 head on and a lot of hassle could ensue as the m52 ally blocks like to strip threads when re torquing headbolts.

Thanks for all the advice and sorry for all the questions. Iv spoke to the lad and I think he is willing to refund me half the money so might just keep it in the corner of the shed for the sake of 40 quid. I'm determined to yet an m50 2.5 but is there anything off the 2.3 I could uterlise on a 2.5?i know the answer is probably no but if there is I can justify it to the mrs :)

You have an M52B25, its an ally block 2.5. The head is the same as the 2.8, including the cam profiles. The pistons and i believe the rods or crank are what changes on a 2.8, you can quite easily change your 2.5 to a 2.8 if you were so inclined. There was no such thing as a 2.3 m52, 323s were 2.5s.

As gooly said it is a 2.5 yes i did state on ebay that it was a m50 insted of a m52 and i apologise for that and i am willing to give you a bit of a refund
