MX5 Driftland

Went down to Driftland at the weekend and threw together some clips. Was my second proper drift day, think I did not bad. Just gutted at how ropey getting the big corner was after how close my initial attempts before my ARB shat itself were.

Next time going to try to take the corner before the wall as wide as I can to try and get up to 65/70 for entry to the big corner and try to initiate later. Anything else anyone notices i'm doing thats mince let me know, would be appreciated.
Cheers

I am hoping to make it up to Driftland over the winter in my MX5 :) Decent seeing as it's only your second drift day. If I were to try and offer advice it would be to steer the car with the throttle not the steering wheel. Once you've turned in and clutch kicked, let go of the wheel and catch it, then steer your line with the wheel and your angle with the throttle. Much easier said than done but when you've got the balls to go for it (as you've shown) practice makes perfect.

Ian. :)

looks good sir, keep at it. you look to be between a top of 2nd gear flick initiation, and a 3rd gear with repeat clutch kicks.

just get some more practice time where possible.

if you spot me (either a purple e36 m3 with a big wing or a red e36 m3 with a ducktail come and noise me up i'll take you out on track so you can see different driving styles etc)

good effort for a second day drifting and fair play to have balls to upload videos and ask for tips. Much better than most people who just pretend they are awesome from day one.

If you struggling to maintain the drift on long bends, which is to be expected in an mx5, trying banging in a few clutch kicks, not just one to initiate. If it feels like its about to grip and bog down, keep the throttle nailed and jab the clutch hard, just an instant kick like your stamping on a coke can. try that.

You're not doing anything hugely wrong, so that's good, looked like you seemed to get a feel for what's going right and wrong (which is most peoples problems, just not getting it) so you'll learn yourself quite well.

Main thing I think, is you're taking too tight a line, turning in too soon, especially on the corner after the wall, which makes it much much harder to maintain the drift, so you end up facing the grass at too low a speed to carry the drift on.
With MX5s this is no use as you got no power to power out, even clutch kicks wouldn't have helped most of that, you gotta keep the momentum up by taking the wider faster line.

Bit more speed and a wider line and you'll be ok, going on from what Blackett said, it seemed to be the only 'steering' you were doing was to try and fix things when they're not working out, which is fine and unavoidable, you were letting go of the wheel etc as you should when it was working out fine.

Cheers for the replies so far guys. Living up in the sticks its a bit of a mission getting seat time in but have been slacking so thats going to stop.
Blackett - Yeah I realised later in the day that I wasn't really focusing on my throttle and more bashing it on and off along with steering but it seemed to be working so didn't bother switching it up. Will keep it in mind next time for sure.

Ren - 2nd gear initiations on the big corner was either when I didn't have the speed for 3rd if there was a car in front and I wasn't feeling confident or if it was in my first couple of runs before my mate suggested to just go flat out and kick it in third on entry haha. - Thanks for the offer on getting a run, would be appreciated and I'm sure I'd take away quite a bit from it being in a higher powered car rather than low power.

J - I was trying that but from the footage I kept spinning most times I tried a 2nd kick, Will just persevere and will no doubt click at some point.

Stavros - Yeah I kind of always knew I was taking it a bit tight, Jeek was saying to get in in an MX5 I was going to have to take as wide a line as possible. I think the rear smash into the bank and the fact the car was my only way home kind of put the shits into me in that aspect so was probably playing it a bit too safe.

Cheers for the feedback so far, will keep it in mind for next month when I go back down and hopefully I'll have that sweeper!
