Need help bmw people! M50 problems

Hi guys,

I recently bought a bmw e36 323i coupe 1996. I want to put an m50 manifold on it and do all the usual bits to get its power up. But I'm confused on the m50 part as I'm new to all this. Will the m50 be a straight swap onto my engine? Do I need any bits for it? I've got an air filter and asc delete pipe for it, but I was going to put that on regardless of the m50 swap. I don't know anything about bmw's and any help would be greatly appriciated! Thanks

No, I know how to do the swap, I just don't know if it will fit my engine? How do I know if I have a m52 or m50 engine? Because an m52 needs an adapting kit for it. And when I buy the m50 manifold do I have to buy new parts for it? Or is it just take off the old inlet and put on the new one?

Ah ok, is there an m52 manifold I can do the same sort of thing with? So like the m50 engine you can put the m50 on, is there one for the m52?

What are you talking? The M52 (323i, 328i / engine made of aluminum) is another engine, than the M50 (325i / made of steel).
For several reasons the M52 has been slowed down with a small manifold. Less air, less power. At higher revs it can't suck as much air through the Manifold as it could.
That doesn't mean the M50 is more powerful, it has just a bigger manifold. At lower revs the M52 has much more torque.

The Manifold from a M50 is bigger. More air, more power. You see the difference inside the Manifold, the 6 Pipes are nearly double as large.

Next thing is the software that tells the engine the hole story and you will have about 15 to 20hp more. That simple. You will find no n/a engine where it is easier to gain 20hp on a low budget as this.

just wanting to let people know if they are reading this with the same problems. I look all over the place for the cheapest way to do this conversion. M50 Manifold Conversion Kit • BMW Spare PartBMW Spare Part
this is the best kit i found, I havent fitted mine yet, but if you ring up the same company, you can have an m50 fitted to you m52 and remapped all for £350. They supply everything, even the m50. I thought this was a reasonable price for everything.

Fair enough but I wouldn't recommend it for a car you intend to keep clean /daily.

All the silicone hose kits are a bit of a bodge imo and losing the ccv can cause issues in itself.

The best route is alpina527 for a properly machined m50 manifold that bolts on and keeps everything working the way it should (some kits even leave the dipstick hanging loose)

Also bmwsparepart have been discussed over on e36coupe and the owner (chap that does all the work) doesn't have much of a clue, he gets all his info from somebody else.
