Hi there, dunno if my words will be of benefit, but I come from a similar situation.
I did a 'drift experience' with Drift Limit at Bovingdon as a complete beginner. It was a gold package, which meant something like 50 laps of their small track in an MX5 - 40th b'day present from my sister.
It was certainly better than I was expecting. I walked away thinking that this was something I could pick up, the instructor was brilliant, but 50 laps was certainly not enough! And it was very much an experience, rather than anything that teaches you a skill set.
However, it gave me the bug. I bought a cheap car, and to date have done three drift practice days in Kings Lynn (4th one coming up this Saturday - woo!). There, they just let you get on with it. Scary in the first instance, but it quickly gets you! Plenty of seat time and plenty of run-off when you get it wrong - and you will many, many times! During the first day, I made sure of sitting in with some the experienced guys, and just watched what they were doing, rather than watching where we were going. I also got a bit of instruction from the organiser who is bloody brilliant! Three sessions in, and I can now do it. Not brilliantly obviously, and still have sooo much to learn, but it is the most satisfying thing in the world when you realise that you can link the whole circuit, and then even more so when you link the circuit continuously for an entire session without spinning.
I'm now totally hooked!
On a side note, if you do go to Drift Limits, they will put the sales pitch on you to buy more stuff during the briefing at a reduced price. I totally totally recommend doing 4 or so laps in the Arial Atom with the pro driver. It's about 350 BHP, with formula Renault wheels and brakes. Bloody hell, the noise from the supercharger will live with me forever - and I've never been around corners so quickly!
