I've asked here instead of trawling the tech posts as I want personal experiences from people who have tried certain setups

so guys i have another 323 lined up but after my last one fell through it got me to thinking is the 323 a good place to start? do i hold out for a 2.8 or should i start smaller like a 1.8? i see loads of posts about what are good starter cars but no one really touches where to start engine wise i know anything rwd will skid but im looking to the future and i thought the 323 would give better tunerblity in the long run. im trying to keep costs down so any advice would be helpful

Hey I'm new here too, been in the car scene a while but drifting is all fresh to me!

I can't really comment on the 323 but from the advice from the good people on here is the 328 seems a very tuneable engine and plenty of torque top end too, my mate is currently running the 325 M50 engine and absolutely swears by it and if your looking at the 1.8 then go for the 318is (I think) about 150bhp if I recall correctly and bulletproof from the reviews I've read online however maybe you will outgrow the power quicker than one of the 6 cylinder engines. That's about as helpful as I can be im afraid [emoji23]

Cheers Dan. When it comes to the 323 I've been told the only difference between that and the 325 is the manifold and if you do the M50 manifold conversion it's basically a 2.5 how true this is I don't know. I've also been in the car seen a while my daily is a 98 Volvo V70R remapped to 300bhp and yer I noticed the power drop when I drove a 323 I've gotten so used to the punch of the Volvo lol

Firstly welcome dude!

A 36 323 would be a perfect place to start, I myself learnt in the exact same along with many others.

As for how tuneable they are, you can do the standard mods of m50 manifold, throttle body, injectors, remap etc. However for the power gained I really wouldn't bother. Leave the engine stock spend the money on a diff with a more favourable ratio, a small case or a medium from a 325, a seat and a harness and go get some seat time.

Edit:
The m50 in the 325s also has a steel block as opposed to the ally block in the 323s.

A 320 diff would be one of the better options imo. Anything from a 316-325 would work fine. However the auto small case might be slightly too short.

I drift an E36 323i (2.5) Saloon. Spec as below.

M50 Manifold
RAMAIR CAI
Remap
Straight Piped with a Cherry Bomb (no original cat or silencers)
Tuning Art Coilovers

The engine mods alone will put the engine over 200bhp, plenty enough to get it sideways. Mine has the original diff which has been welded, brilliant fun but don't forget to put bucket seats and harnesses in otherwise you'll be bouncing off the drivers door, lol.

Happy days.

I got a Pair of good Cobra Bucket /Rally Seats for £50 off ebay and the seller gave me a pair of nearly new Sabelt Harnesses, guess l dropped lucky though but both highly recommended.

You can get good bargains on Gumtree too.

Argh the dredded fleabay that thing does my head in nowadays almost paying retail for stuff that's half as good. But like you said you can get lucky

You sure can mate I just picked up a e46 323 11 month mot for £450

I got my E36 323i on Ebay, still had 8 months mot and only 92k on the clock, paid £410 for it, car on my profile is what l got.

Happy days and bargains to be had if you're patient enough..
