Power Steering Going Funny....

Idea's?

When i go from lock to lock (on the spot and moving slowly i notice it), it feels like the steering "snags" at times, the feeling you get when your tyres catch body work i guess... Then i noticed today if i slam the wheel to full lock (on the spot) it'll appear to hit the lock stops, but it actually hasnt. If i carry on turning the wheel it'll slowly judder further around, probably another 40 degree's worth of turn. Its only a small amount of overall lock im missing but i need it :)

Think it could be something simple like the fluid needing a change or the belt slipping?

Thanks!

weird. I had similar problems, when turning at low speeds or stopped it would cut out intermittently  I sorta put it down to bubbles in the fluid or something like that. I topped it up after that and it took quite a bit of fluid.

I had this with the cossy and it was crap in the fluid and bubbles causing lock up in the fluid movement. Think they are bad for it because of the size of the hole the fluid passes through, Steve opened out the hole on his track car.
I would change the fluid

Weve got a thing at work the drains, flushes and refills the rack

The biggest reason for rack failures is shitty fluid. Im sure you'll pick up a 86' power rack at ur local halfrauds :D

Tried bleeding the system?

Make sure the fluid is at the upper mark, jack the front up, run the engine, turn the wheel from lock to lock several times and hold it on lock for about 3 or 4 secs each time.

Shut the engine down, lower the car to the deck, let the PAS fluid cool a bit then check the level.

If it's gone down a bit, you've just displaced that much air from the system. Top it up and see how she goes. If there's still symptoms, bleed again.

Could just be a slipping belt.

 try doing an autotest in an s13 and you'll experience the limitations of the power steering pump. dialling in lock from one end to the other in quick succession can often affect the steering feel, it's much worse at a slower speed though - anyone got a manual quickrack for theirs?
