Project S13

Right, well at last I have got myself an S13. :)

Picked it up last night and it is now parked at my work awaiting me to take the head off. I have bought it with a suspected siezed camshaft, shouldn't really be a problem as between myself and my mates we have got a few spare parts.

Reading through the book of reciepts that came with it it would appear to of had a brand new Hybrib Turbo Technics Turbo fitted 8 months ago and at some point early in it life an uprated actuator and a ECU Chip. Hoping to get the head off of it on Saturday and inspect it for damage.

Is there anything I should be watching out for that they are common for and should I be thinking of uprating anything whilst I have got it stripped down?

I am also on the look for a set of second hand coilovers as I haven't really got the spare cash for new at the minute and some 17" or 18" deep dish alloys. I have got it booked in to have the arches rolled and flared so width, within reason, shouldn't be a problem.

This is my first, hope to be, drift car so I am still quite new to all the jargon that surrounds it. Any help and advice will be greatfully recieved and I hope to be out on the roads soon!! :smokin:

advice time- don't do anything to your arches until you've got the new wheels and tyres, otherwise you're guessing at how much you wanna roll rather than getting it bang on 1st time:)

oh, consider changing the big ends too

if it were me id spend my money on a decent seat the stock ones are a total joke and you can concentrate on steering and not hanging on.

couldn't aggree more, reputably(if there is such a word) soft bottom, money well spent and you'll thank us in the future... keep the oil changed regularily too, and good luck with it..!

Thanks guys, bottom end will get sorted now then!!

Planning on changing the oil every 3000 miles, any grade of oil recommended? What plugs do people recommend too?

Keep an eye on the for sale section on SXOC i've seen a couple of pairs of S13 coilovers, spare diffs that can be welded etc goin lately

10w50 or thicker is good. I use Silkolene 15w50 (supplied by Opie Oils :Plug: ). As said, sort the big ends. While the head is off get it pressure tested, some have a problem with soft valves/seats that prematurely wear.

Well the head is now off and the bottom end has been checked. Bottom end is all good so no really need to change anything for the minute. As for the head, well it would appear that when the head was fitted last time something got trapped under the inlet camshaft in bearing number 1 and was then torqued down into the head!!! This has then siezed the cam up and stripped the teeth from the cam belt, which is nice! No signs of any contact between the valves and the pistons but still got to strip the head and check all the valves. Replacement head should be with me by Monday night, do you guys recomend that I get it skimmed or anything before I rebuild it? Also it has got a metal HKS head gasket fitted, some people tell me that I can use this again and others say not. Any advice????

Yep, you can reuse the HG. Clean it off with a green scouring pad thingy. A good idea to get the head skimmed, or at the very least checked, metal HGs arent as forgiving as stock head gaskets.

Well the S13 is still without a head. With the time of year and people being busy I haven't got my replacement head yet and when I phoned the engineering place about getting the new head pressure tested and skimmed I was told it would be mid January before they could get it done for me as they were shutting all through Xmas anyway. Really can't wait to get it all done and start using it. :) :) :)
