R33 (Nissan?) Steering Rack Centre

this one has been bugging me for the last twice that I've had the car aligned...

every time it comes back, the steering wheel isnt straight and the car pulls slightly to the left...

my question is as follows...

is there a way to measure the rack to set the "absolute" centre? i know this is possible on my old calibra (nostalgic sigh...) but never required it. the old jap rack should have the same feature, surely...

It depends, could be your steering wheel off centre. If they are aligning it from the rack, its the steering wheel, if they are locking the steering wheel straight and aligning it, something else is wrong.

Or, it could be any of the above and the rear alignment out. That will make it steer funny too.

I'd just go to somewhere decent.

i am confident that the alignment was done well, just that getting the steering wheel dead straight is a difficult task; hence asking if there is an alternate method for determining the true centre of the steering rack

Jack it up and count how many turns it is from lock to lock and divide by two.:) Wind the steering over so its centred, take the steering wheel off and put it back on straight. Then go get it aligned again.

As for it pulling to the left, what suspension mods have you got and what alignment? My car is all mega hard, coilovered etc and I find it tramlines fairly badly and is very sensitive to road camber. You'll find an awful lot of roads slope down very slightly to the left.;)
